ACCA Zimbabwe’s 2020 conference, on the theme of ‘Rethinking business: building a resilient recovery’, attracted 125 ACCA members and around 15 non-ACCA professionals.

The packed programme covered areas such as IFRS 16, tax developments, digital risks and the future of work in a post-Covid-19 world. Tinashe Murerekwa ACCA, a partner at Kreston Zimbabwe, and Marvellous Tapera, CEO at Matrix Tax School, presented on technical topics, while Tricha Simon FCCA, a risk and advisory partner at Deloitte and Touche, considered the risks around doing business digitally.

Investment opportunities

Duduzile Shinya, CFO of Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency and president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Zimbabwe, explored the issues around making the country an attractive foreign investment destination. Currently, many barriers exist, such as the lengthy process of registering a company. Shinya noted, however, that the agency has been created to improve processes.

Leading on from this discussion, Professor Ashok Chakravarti, a senior economic adviser to the Ministry of Finance and a member of the Central Bank’s monetary policy committee, considered Zimbabwe’s economic outlook.

Sustainability and social value

The conference also included a presentation on the Professional Insights report Mainstreaming impact: scaling a sustainable recovery from Jimmy Greer, ACCA’s head of sustainability, and a discussion on social value investment post-pandemic from Janice Sambaza, MD at Ivhu Advisors, while Anne-Marie Russel, ACCA’s employee relations case consultant, explored the importance of physical, mental and spiritual health.
