I’m on secondment as the professional assistant to the head of profession. My main role is to act as the first point of contact for queries from the wider internal audit profession in central government. I work closely with the head of the Government Internal Audit Function and the head of the Government Internal Audit Profession.
The role brings me into contact with a range of professionals and stakeholders. It is an opportunity to broaden my understanding of the profession and its impact. Having said that, since lockdown I’ve been working from home, and I do miss the social aspect.
Internal audit has needed to adapt to a rapidly changing environment, both in performing our role and how we support our customers. My challenge is keeping on top of this and providing support to the wider profession across government. The ever-changing landscape makes my role interesting and cuts across all government departments. There is nothing I would change about my work except for maybe a few extra hours in the day.
Take any opportunities that arise to try different roles or sectors and find the one that motivates you the most
My advice to those embarking on a professional accounting career is that passing exams is only the start. It’s the experience you gain from your roles that gives you the understanding and confidence to progress. Take any opportunities that arise to try different roles or sectors and find the one that motivates you the most. The ACCA Qualification gave me options and opened doors for me to change my career.
I’ve not been scared to put myself forward for roles – there are so many to choose from. I’ve worked in the retail, financial services and manufacturing sectors, and as a senior lecturer teaching accountancy and public sector auditing at the University of South Wales. My biggest achievement was becoming a senior lecturer there once I’d qualified. It was something I always wanted to try and I loved every minute of it.
Away from work, I’ve started swimming at my local pool. I’ve not done swimming for about 10 years and it is helping me to get out of the house. I’m hoping to return to my volunteer role with a local memorial hall once restrictions allow.
