I was a police officer for five years but the night shifts and long hours weren’t for me, so I retrained as an accountant. I volunteered in an accounting practice on my days off, frequently after night shifts. It was hard work but definitely worth it, and a unique entry into accounting, which allows me to gauge people pretty well.

If you’re in your comfort zone, you’re not doing business right. Challenges are uncomfortable but without them we will never improve ourselves. You should always strive to do at least two uncomfortable things a day. One challenge I have overcome is starting an accountancy practice in the middle of a pandemic, after Parker & Co acquired Griffiths & James in August. It’s hard work but also great fun.

At the start of each working day, I take a deep breath and say to myself: let’s do this. We are currently overhauling the IT systems. The day-to-day role and IT change is proving a challenge but a necessity in the current climate.

I think sole practitioners will always be required. Some businesses will always want a local, friendly feel. I believe we provide this service and use technology to work more closely with them, allowing them to get on with running their businesses.

If I had could make a law, it would be that both sexes would be able to take least a year’s maternity/paternity leave. Parenthood is hard work, and the first few years of a child’s life are unbelievably valuable to all.

Outside of work, I cycle a lot and play squash. I also love basketball and music.
