I think I was the first-born Australian to qualify with ACCA! At the time it wasn’t well known in Australia. I successfully campaigned for years so that ACCA members could be recognised as tax advisers in this country. The qualification is a global passport that I’ve leveraged to work in Canada, Singapore, England and my home of Australia.
I’m 100% digital – I run my practice out of my handbag. I call myself a hype girl for accounting apps, and educate and excite people about using technology. I create and curate content, which includes publishing books, hosting webinars, speaking at events and drip-feeding education on social media platforms. Of course, this includes promoting the relevant and brilliant ACCA Professional Insights content.
I sit on both ACCA’s SME Global Forum and its Technology Global Forum. You get to hear about issues and insights from other ACCA members from around the world. The forums and panels lead into the development of ACCA’s Professional Insights reports. From there, when you meet clients and colleagues, you can talk with credibility based on relevant research and also introduce the findings to the community. It’s a ripple effect that has a far-reaching impact on our society.
Fortunately, ACCA has a huge membership body, and there are many areas to explore and opportunities to connect with people with similar interests
I’d encourage members to reach out to their local ACCA head office. Identify if there are any forums of interest to join. My niche is accounting technology and SMPs. Your niche might be an obsession with data, or not-for-profit entities (NFPs) or sustainability. ACCA has a huge membership body, and there are many areas to explore and opportunities to connect with people with similar interests. Be curious, be generous and, in this digital world, lean into ACCA and connect with its members across the globe.
