We are a family-run company that has operated in Northern Ireland for over 25 years. We maintain many public sector contracts that support and aid health, fire and rescue, policing and education.

Maintaining these services is always critical, but has taken on a new significance given the events of the past year. With the country exiting lockdown and daily life resuming, these services will hopefully continue to provide a solid basis for our return to normality.

The last year has made it clear to all businesses that they must have sufficient reserves to maintain themselves in unprecedented times

My ability to work with people is something I consider important in my career to date. I have worked in varying sectors and with many different clients over the years, and learned to communicate effectively and resolve any problems that arise.

Previously, when in practice, I found I could strike up a rapport with clients and work with them to achieve our common goals. I am still in touch with many of them.

Both professionally and personally, the biggest issue I encountered during the pandemic was being socially distanced. To go from an environment where you’re working with hundreds of people, talking and interacting daily, to working from home on your own was a big change. Of course, there were some upsides and many of our staff have found that working from home suits them better.

Varied working hours rather than the standard nine to five was also a positive for many, including myself. A blended mix of working is something that we will continue for our office staff.

Looking beyond the pandemic, our key short-term business goal is to rebuild the business and working capital. The last year has made it clear to all businesses that they must have sufficient reserves to maintain themselves in unprecedented times.

This will be a priority when restrictions ease and normal working life returns. In the longer-term, we will review the business strategy to make it more robust and capable of withstanding future hurdles.

Our business has supported the local community for many years. We have sponsored local sporting teams and contributed to many education events that help our younger generation outside of schools.

Within our firm, we have started initiatives for our employee’s mental health and wellbeing. This will hopefully provide benefits for many years to come.

The most important lesson I have learnt is to have patience and listen. People appreciate being listened to and heard. Regular catch-ups and chats help create a better atmosphere and improve overall productivity.

Not everyone has the same way of looking at things, and allowing other opinions and ideas to be shared may lead to a better way of doing something that would not previously have been considered.
