Accountants in Africa are contributing to strategic direction and the development of business insights in the upper echelons of organisations, with an increasing number making it to top jobs in the C-suite.

Leading factors impacting the profession include process automation and implementation of enterprise resource planning (68%). The digital transformation of the accounting function (71%) and the expanding of skillsets to include new technologies (50%) are cited as top trends for the next decade.

These are just some of the findings of far-reaching research into the state of the accountancy profession across Africa, carried out by ACCA, the Pan African Federation of Accountants (PAFA) and PwC. Due to be published in May, the report will centre on four key themes: capacity building, partnerships, influencing for socio-economic development, and future-readiness.

The cross-continental research included a survey of more than 1,750 members of the profession in Africa, stakeholder roundtables involving over 100 key professionals, and interviews with leaders in regional organisations and public-sector institutions.
