As the summer holidays come to an end (if not the drought), we mark the start of the football season, and warm up for the World Cup in Qatar in November, with an AB podcast on football finance. In it, Kieran Maguire, football finance lecturer at the University of Liverpool, looks at what’s at stake for the tournament’s organisers as well as for football clubs and investors more broadly.
Earlier this year, the government set out its plans for reforming corporate reporting and governance. There was already a sense of frustration over delays, and these have only deepened since the resignation of Boris Johnson as prime minister, which might mean that any reforms roll further into the long grass. We look at where we are currently with the various regulatory proposals, which we’ll update as any plans change under a new Tory regime.
Taxation has featured heavily in the leadership debates over the summer. Meanwhile, the public sector is under pressure to ensure taxpayers’ funds are deployed efficiently. We explore how local authorities and other public bodies can manage expenditure by ensuring contracts are delivering.
Other key content this month includes a feature on changes to business rates and what this means for SME clients; the illusion that perfectionism is a desirable quality in job candidates; and forthcoming amendments to IFRS Standards for SMEs.
