There was a time at university when I was very confused about my future, and I did not know how to choose my career path. It was around that time that ACCA held a talk at my school and introduced the accounting industry and its prospects. It was then that I decided to major in accounting.

I currently work as a foreign exchange trader. I am responsible for trading in the foreign exchange and precious metals markets, among others. It is a challenging job that requires me and my colleagues to always be sensitive to financial markets. The job also requires us to develop our own analysis framework and trading logic to be able to make judgments and act on them within a short period of time.

It’s important to keep up with the trends, to always maintain a passion for learning and to stay curious about the world

As the world’s second-largest economy, the global status of the Chinese economy is gradually rising. At the same time, China’s capital market is becoming more closely connected with the global market. As a result, China needs to build teams of financial accounting talents to have a say and to be more influential.

China still has a big gap between the demand and supply of financial professionals that has yet to be filled. Whether you are an accountant, analyst or trader, you can have a promising future working in the market economy using your professional abilities.

As Chinese society progresses and becomes even more diversified, young financial accounting professionals have infinite possibilities in their career development. My hope is that we all can widen our horizons and not limit ourselves to accounting, finance and international trade, to be good at our chosen major or career, but never limited to it.

We should learn more cutting-edge technologies such as blockchain, big data and artificial intelligence, and even consider philosophical questions. It’s important to keep up with the trends, to always maintain a passion for learning and to stay curious about the world.

In this digital age, the requirements for professionals are getting higher and pure operational work has been essentially replaced. We need to adjust our mindsets and foster our capabilities to analyse and make judgments in uncertain and complex situations while developing a core competence.
