This month we speak with Ben Bushell FCCA, who made the decision to move from the UK to Canada and swap a career in restaurants to leisure resorts. As CFO of Friday Harbour, he quite literally now lives life like every day is Friday.

Bushell has to juggle the finances of real estate, golf courses marinas, retail and hotels as well as hospitality. He readily admits that his ACCA Qualification has allowed him to take on these challenges in new sectors in a new country.

Elsewhere, we review the state of the US economy. With recession clouds gathering, good news on jobs and spending could yet help the US avoid serious economic slowdown, which in turn could be good news for the global economy.

We also look at how smaller practices tackle the issue of billing for their services: fixed fees, hourly rates or a combination of the two. Practices around the world set out what works for them. And if you’ve wondered how to get your practice noticed, we have some top tips.

Finally, we hear from Eelco van der Enden, CEO of the Global Reporting Initiative, on the importance of trust and transparency as organisations grapple with their impact on the environment and society.
