I have over 20 years’ experience in the accounting profession. I studied accounting at university because I thought a degree in accounting would provide better career prospects and opportunities for professional growth.

After graduation, I started working in a local accounting firm in Hong Kong. During the first few years of my career, I was engaged in audits of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from different industries, where I accumulated experience and knowledge.

In 2000, I joined CCIF CPA, which later merged with another firm to become Crowe (HK) CPA. I am currently an audit partner; I provide audit and assurance services to a range of clients, from SMEs to listed companies with businesses in Hong Kong, mainland China and overseas.

The job is challenging because I handle audit assignments for a wide variety of industries, each with its own distinctive characteristics. I need to understand each industry I handle as this helps me perform risk assessments during the audit process.

I act as a mentor to help my team members develop their capabilities so we can all thrive together

The challenges that lie ahead are in the changes and development of auditing and reporting standards, as well as regulatory and compliance requirements. Accounting firms need to develop and apply new policies and procedures to adapt to these changes. Another challenge is the shortage of talent, with graduates less willing to enter the accounting sector due to long working hours.

As an audit partner, I manage my team and also act as a mentor. I am here to help them develop their capabilities so we can all thrive together.

Due to globalisation, many Chinese enterprises do not only want to list in mainland China but also in Hong Kong and overseas. As mainland China has adopted international accounting standards, we foresee that there will be more cooperation between professional accounting firms globally.

Sound management skills, to ensure that all team members uphold professional standards, are essential. It is also important to maintain staff morale; as a mentor, I let my team know that their hard work will pay off.

Working in the accounting industry requires ongoing education and graduates should continue to complete professional examinations, as well as fulfilling CPD requirements. Good planning and effective time management are therefore essential to juggle work and study.

Outside of work, I spend most of my free time taking my children to outdoor activities and meeting friends and family. I try to find things to do which help me relax and recharge.
