Our main interview this month is with a member from Eswatini, a small landlocked country to the east of South Africa with a population of just one million. Phindile Ndlandla ACCA, CFO of the Eswatini branch of Botswana-based multinational financial services provider Letshego, is just one of 160 accountants in her country and was voted ACCA’s Africa Young CFO of the Year in 2022. She tells of her pride in adding value, both at her company and at the national level.

Adding value, albeit in a different way, is also our columnist Okey Umeano’s theme this month. Recently Botswana joined Zimbabwe, DR Congo and Nigeria in taking action to retain a larger slice of the profits from the export of its natural resources. It’s a step in the right direction, says Umeano, as he puts the argument for more products to be processed in Africa prior to export and explains how finance professionals can get involved.

Meanwhile, we should acknowledge the significant milestone that is the approval of the first sustainability reporting standards from the ISSB. Given that the standard-setter was only set up in November 2021, this has all happened remarkably quickly.

We also look at an EY report that has found that keeping employees motivated and engaged is crucial to successful change programmes. It lists six key ways that leaders can put their people at the heart of organisational transformation.

Finally, on a lighter note, we have a piece on how to write well. It’s all about bringing your audience with you, says our contributor.
