I grew up in one family of bankers and then married into another. Despite being passionate about sciences at school, thinking back, I was subconsciously inspired by my family to take the accounting path. I still remember an article my father shared about the number of professional accountants in Malaysia being insufficient, and how I would be doing my country a favour if I became one.
I took up accounting as an additional high school subject, just to have an ‘extra A’ when I graduated. But I instantly fell in love with it and won a scholarship to study accounting at the University of Queensland in Australia. I had my mind set on ACCA as a pathway to being a globally recognised accountant. My hunch was right, as I was offered a place to kickstart my career in EY Malaysia as a financial auditor before I’d even completed my ACCA studies. I spent almost four years there before taking a leap of faith and joining the banking industry.
I hope someday to represent the female Muslim community as an expert in banking and accounting
I intend to cultivate my skills and gain unparalleled experience with a view to representing the female Muslim community as an expert in banking and accounting. I hope that someday I’ll be able to lay a path for my children to follow and prosper, and for them to always be proud to call me their mother. I want to look back on my career and be proud of my work and having tried everything to be my very best.
To be where I am today, I’m most lucky to have my husband, my daughter, my parents and my siblings as my emotional support system. As for professional support, I am truly grateful and lucky to work with positive, supportive and competent superiors and colleagues in Bank Rakyat.
Nothing brings more joy than managing numbers into structured reports that are informative to users
Bank Kerjasama Rakyat Malaysia, where I’m a finance executive, is the biggest cooperative bank in Malaysia. My main tasks are preparing the group financial statements and submitting periodic reports to regulators. I also act as liaison to the attorney general, external auditors and the central bank on financial reporting matters. I’m sure I speak for others when I say nothing brings more joy and a sense of fulfilment than working with numbers and figures, managing them into structured, comprehensive and arranged reports that are informative to users.
If I weren’t an accountant, I might have been a traveller. I’d have tried to blend in with the locals, find out the best (secret) things, discover unique stories you cannot find in travel magazines, and try out every local dish to taste the country’s culture. I’d try to get lost and embrace the adventure, seeing beautiful things I’d never seen before.
