I set up my own practice after working for a top-10, a top-20 and then a small local independent firm. It was this last that gave me confidence to start up on my own. One of the principals there became quite the cheerleader, encouraging me and helping me to consider all options, so I took the plunge.

One of my doubts about setting up my own practice was not having anybody to lean on. But I feel more supported now than I ever was because I have such a great network behind me, of former colleagues and other practitioners I know.

What I enjoy most is having the freedom of doing what I want and helping people

I run a general practice and picked up most of my clients through existing connections. They come from a range of sectors; I love that variety and getting the scoop on different industries.

What I enjoy most is having the freedom of doing what I want and helping people. Also, I’m always learning – about particular industries but also about how businesses conduct their affairs, how they succeed or fail, and how little changes can have a transformational impact on efficiencies in working practices. We all need to embrace new technology and develop our skills in this area. But we also need expert communications skills to be able to deliver that relevant and timely advice.

Professional accountants have to go beyond compliance work and into the growing area of ESG

Professional accountants today have to be trusted advisers, going beyond compliance work such as Making Tax Digital and into the growing area of ESG. We’re going to have to work with clients on climate-related disclosures, as there’s a strong chance that one day they’ll be mandated. My clients are SME owner-managed businesses and they’re less directly affected by it at the moment, but all the major players have 2050 net-zero ambitions to meet, and it will trickle down. Accountants are the ones with the data, and the analytical and soft skills to apply that data, so we’re the perfect people for the ESG role.

In my free time, I like to go for long dog walks with my energetic cockapoo. I also look after my nine-year-old daughter, who has a busier social calendar than my own!
