Our interview this month is with Amit Kooyela FCCA, CFO of HV Holdings. After nearly two decades with shipping and logistics group AP Møller-Maersk, criss-crossing Europe, Africa and South-East Asia, since 2020 he’s been back in his home country at the family-owned Mauritian conglomerate. A finalist in the ACCA Africa CFO of the Year Awards in 2022, he believes in ‘going above and beyond to add value’.

In recent times African CFOs have been grappling with challenges stemming from international events beyond their control. In another article we hear how CFOs in the region have been coping and ask whether, with the US Federal Reserve signalling the tightening cycle could be nearing its end, business conditions in Africa could be about to improve in their turn.

Intraregional trade on the continent has long been hobbled by the need to complete transactions by way of the dollar or euro. Our columnist Okey Umeano FCCA proposes an interim solution that could bring down transaction costs and ease the process of cross-border payment. Find out more here.

Elsewhere, AI is once again a focus – when isn’t it? We look at an ACCA report that explores the technological developments that are likely to change the future of accountancy and how these are being deployed (or not).

Lastly, just a reminder that registration for ACCA’s annual virtual conference ‘Accounting for the Future’ is now open. Find out about the topics under discussion over the three days (with 21 CPD units on offer), and register to watch live on 21-23 November or on demand. For members in the public sector, ACCA’s Virtual Public Sector Conference is being run on 24 November (and available on demand). Find out more.
