Artificial intelligence (AI) may divide opinion, but in our main interview this month Anne Keogh FCCA is clear about its potential for making a real difference to people’s lives. As CFO of start-up Ambisense she discusses using AI and data to improve environmental monitoring, identifying issues before they become a health hazard.

Recent research shows that accountants lead the way in investing in AI, with mid-cap accounting and finance businesses out-spending other professional services firms.

Driving change is a theme in several of our articles.  Lynne Oglesby FCCA is director of finance and operations, National Youth Council of Ireland, whose work is directed at supporting young people struggling to deal with the impact of lockdown and the rising cost of living.

With money tight for many, columnist Ian Guider argues that accountants have an important role in improving the public’s financial literacy

Moving to a more sustainable world is a critical priority, and switching to electric vehicles is good for tackling climate challenges. However, it reduces the government’s tax take, and we look at alternative approaches.

AB also highlights the opportunities likely to open up for accountants as Ireland bids to become the base for a new EU centralised Anti-Money Laundering Authority.

And if you are looking to add more to your CPD portfolio, we have an article on auditing complex company structures.

Finally, registration for ACCA’s annual virtual conference ‘Accounting for the Future’ is now open. Find out  about the topics under discussion over the three days (with 21 CPD units on offer), and  register  to watch live on 21-23 November or on demand.
