Since childhood, I dreamed of pursuing a career either as a singer or an accountant; remarkably, I’ve managed to achieve both. However, I decided to focus on a career in accounting.

Conditions in the Mauritian property sector are challenging, as it is subject to economic fluctuations, complex regulations and an oversupply of luxury properties. There are also significant opportunities – tourism-driven projects are currently very promising and real estate investment schemes are also attracting foreign investors, while affordable housing and commercial properties are meeting the growing local demand.

I started my career as an audit junior at Appavoo and Associates (now part of HLB International), before switching to the corporate side as an accounts officer at Happy World, a food and retail business. In 2021, after a spell in a similar role at Panagora Marketing, I joined MaxCity, a collection of companies in the real estate and information technology sectors, as the group accountant.

‘Leadership is not about being in charge, but about taking care of those in your charge’

My favourite quote comes from business leadership guru Simon Sinek: ‘Leadership is not about being in charge, but about taking care of those in your charge.’ This speaks to my desire to make a contribution to society.

What I find most fulfilling about my role is overseeing finances for different parts of the company. I get great satisfaction from analysing numbers to find ways to improve how we handle money and I enjoy working with different teams, witnessing how colleagues grow and develop under my guidance.

My biggest achievement has been establishing a structured accounting department within the group. When I arrived at MaxCity, the department had no clear organisation in place. We centralised the accounting team and recruited the right talent. This streamlined our processes and improved efficiency, and has ensured accurate reporting across the organisation.

If I hadn’t pursued a career in accounting, I would have followed my passion for music

If I had law-making powers, I would prioritise environmental protection. I would put in place regulations aimed at cutting pollution and advancing clean energy initiatives to foster healthier lifestyles. I would also champion universal access to quality education as that is the only way to provide opportunities to everyone.

If I hadn’t pursued a career in accounting and finance, I would have followed my passion for music as a professional singer-songwriter. I participated in two competitions, Les Chansons de la Francophonie where I performed my own composition, and Star Show, which opened the door for me to perform as a singer in several top hotels. Music has a unique ability to uplift and inspire, and I would have found fulfilment in bringing joy to others through my songs.

In my spare time I still find joy in singing – Whitney Houston is my favourite artist. I also love hiking, especially climbing summits with breathtaking views – in Mauritius, I’ve climbed Le Pouce, Corps de Garde, La Tourelle and Le Morne Brabant. Socialising with friends is my favourite way to relax, and exploring new restaurants adds culinary adventure to my life.
