My favourite quote is from Mahatma Gandhi: ‘The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.’ I believe that true fulfilment comes from positively impacting the lives of others. As accountants, we not only contribute to a business’s profitability but also play a vital role in enhancing the overall well-being of the community.
Businesses in Zimbabwe face significant challenges. The biggest is economic instability, characterised by fluctuating inflation rates and currency devaluation, which create uncertainty in financial planning. There is also a constant struggle to access capital, as many financial institutions are often hesitant to lend due to economic conditions.
I have progressed through various roles, including one at a crocodile farm
Regulatory requirements can be challenging, too, especially for SMEs that lack the resources to navigate complex legislation. The inconsistent power supply and infrastructure issues are also making it difficult for businesses to maintain productivity.
From a young age, I admired my father, who managed a small retail business. Watching him navigate challenges and celebrate successes showed me the importance of sound financial management. This, and my fascination with numbers and how they tell a story about a business, led me to accountancy. I pursued a degree in accounting, followed by gaining the ACCA qualification and then an MBA.
I began my career as a graduate trainee at a pharmaceuticals company, where I learned the fundamentals of accounting. Over the years, I have progressed through various accounting roles, including at a paper-making company and a crocodile farm, a supplier of premium grade crocodilian skins to the luxury brand houses of the world. Currently, I am a systems accountant with a company specialising in animal health products, such as antibiotics and vaccines. Every role has deepened my expertise in financial management, budgeting and ERP systems.
I sought mentorship from colleagues and engaged with software providers
I stepped out of my comfort zone when I took on my current role. I was naturally apprehensive as I had limited experience with the technical aspects of managing ERPs and manipulating SQL databases, but I recognised the importance of embracing this challenge for my professional growth.
To bring myself up to speed, I sought mentorship from colleagues and actively engaged with software providers. The experience not only boosted my confidence but also taught me that tackling challenges can lead to significant professional opportunities. I am now able to handle big data using various software solutions like SQL, Python, Power BI, and, of course, advanced Excel.
What I enjoy most about my job is the dynamic nature of accounting, in that it constantly presents opportunities to solve complex problems. I love the analytical aspect of my work, where I can dive into financial data to help businesses make informed decisions. I like collaborating with diverse teams and find that seeing a project through from conception to successful implementation is incredibly rewarding.
My biggest achievement has been successfully leading the budgeting process for a multi-million-dollar project at a dairy company. This involved coordinating input from various departments, complying with IFRS Standards and presenting to the executive team. The project was challenging, but through effective collaboration we met our deadline and provided a clear roadmap for the project’s financial management.
Empowering SMEs is crucial for economic growth, job creation and innovation
If I had law-making powers, I would put in place more robust support for Zimbabwe’s SMEs. This would include tax incentives, easier access to funding and streamlined regulatory processes. Empowering SMEs is crucial for economic growth, job creation and innovation, so by easing financial burdens and providing resources we can foster a more vibrant economy that benefits everyone.
If I weren’t an accountant, I would pursue a career in data analytics. The ability to analyse and interpret data fascinates me. I believe this field offers exciting opportunities, so much so that I have pursued a master’s degree in data analytics at a local university.
Outside of work, I enjoy reading, particularly books and articles on economics and personal development. I also have a passion for hiking and exploring nature, which helps me recharge and find balance in my busy life.
