I never envisioned myself becoming a chartered accountant until the Enron scandal. Academically, I’d been focused on the sciences, with aspirations of becoming a pharmacist. Everything changed, however, when I watched a documentary about Enron. Learning how auditors can prevent fraud and protect investors amazed me.
I started my career as a financial auditor in Hong Kong. After several years and a brief break to re-evaluate my career trajectory, I transitioned to risk advisory to expand my skills and explore risk management, internal controls and compliance more deeply.
I find fulfilment in resolving challenges for my clients
I currently serve as a senior manager in risk advisory services at BDO. I lead projects such as corporate governance reviews, risk assessments, regulatory compliance reviews and anti-money laundering advisory services. I work closely with financial institutions to help strengthen their risk management strategies, improve operations and ensure they meet regulatory requirements. As a professional adviser, I find fulfilment in resolving challenges for my clients and strengthening my connections with them. Witnessing the transformative impact of my efforts within organisations is truly rewarding.
In Hong Kong’s dynamic risk advisory landscape, professionals face a multitude of challenges and exciting trends. Navigating complex regulatory frameworks, addressing cybersecurity issues and coping with global economic uncertainties that impact business stability are key challenges. On the flip side, the integration of advanced technologies, the heightened focus on environmental, social and governance, and the increasing emphasis on data analytics are promising trends reshaping the industry. For professionals like me, the thrill of problem-solving, the drive to innovate with cutting-edge solutions, and the gratification of witnessing the positive impact of my work on clients’ operations and internal controls keep me motivated and inspired in an ever-changing landscape.
Witnessing people develop and succeed is immensely fulfilling
The ACCA qualification and its professional network have been invaluable to my career. ACCA has not only equipped me with solid accounting and finance knowledge but also boosted my credibility. The global recognition of ACCA has opened doors to international business opportunities and connected me with a diverse network of professionals. This network provides support, valuable resources and insights that have been essential for my professional development, helping me navigate challenges and seize opportunities in my career.
The chance to develop a team and collectively foster the growth of its members has been a significant highlight. It’s not easy; I need to understand the perspectives and needs of everyone to establish trust and cultivate a positive team environment. Witnessing people develop and succeed, knowing that I played a part in their growth, is immensely fulfilling and reinforces my commitment to nurturing a supportive and collaborative work culture that amplifies the strengths of each team member and drives our collective success.
If I weren’t an accountant, I’d probably have followed a path that allowed me to express my creativity and explore my artistic talents. Singing and drawing have always been passions of mine, so perhaps I would have had a career in music or the visual arts, where I could fully immerse myself in the world of creativity and self-expression.
