My primary aim is to provide strategic leadership in finance, procurement, audit and risk management, with a strong focus on allocating resources towards community-centric initiatives. Central to my role is addressing the unique challenges of Tower Hamlets. It’s a diverse and vibrant borough, yet faces distinct needs. My role is to implement the use of data analytics and other advanced technology to streamline our processes and support decision-making.
I have regular interaction with stakeholders, such as corporate directors, the chief executive, and the executive mayor and elected members. These interactions are vital to ensure that our financial strategies align with the council’s strategic objectives and that we can contribute to the wellbeing of the community.
I try to create an environment where we can collaborate and learn from each other
I’ve always had a deep passion for public sector finance, and I’m experienced in managing finances in complex, politically sensitive environments. My role also aligns closely with my personal values, especially given Tower Hamlets’ dedication to its diverse and contrasting community. The council’s most notable challenges currently are bridging the social mobility gap through education, and supporting the community amidst a cost-of-living crisis. Pushing this agenda in the current landscape of public sector finance is an enormous challenge, but is an opportunity to think creatively and be resourceful.
Another aspect I deeply enjoy is working with a team of diverse and highly competent individuals. The staff are not only dedicated to their roles but also have a profound love for their borough and the organisation they represent. Their commitment and expertise make a substantial difference in how we approach and solve the financial challenges. I try to create an environment where we can collaborate and learn from each other.
We hear a lot about the need for professional accountants to transition from being seen as mere number crunchers to becoming business leaders. This requires developing a ‘big picture’ understanding of the organisation; it’s not just about understanding the formulation of business strategy – which is often the more straightforward part – but about grasping the nuances of its implementation. The ability to effectively implement strategy is what differentiates a true business leader from the pack. We accountants have a unique opportunity to develop these skills, given our involvement in various aspects of an organisation’s decision-making processes.
I believe that with education, proper direction and hard work, ambitious goals are attainable
Being in a leadership position comes with a considerable responsibility, as people look to you for guidance and inspiration. I take immense pride in mentoring and guiding team members, helping them reach their full potential and listening to their concerns.
As a Somali-born FD in local government, my role has an added layer of personal significance. It enables me to be a role model for my community. I believe that with education, proper direction and hard work, ambitious goals are attainable.
I love engaging in community activities and exploring the rich cultural diversity that London offers. I enjoy playing basketball. In the summer, playing at the recently refurbished Bethnal Park courts is an absolute delight. In the winter, I switch to playing indoors. Photography is another hobby. It allows me to capture the world’s beauty and preserve memories, offering a creative outlet that contrasts with my professional life. Also, spending time with my family is paramount. These moments are precious and help me stay grounded and connected.
