This month marks the close of the Uefa Euro 2024 football tournament in Germany, and the start of the Olympic Games in Paris, so we couldn’t resist having a peek at the numbers behind the biggest sporting events on the planet. In our article on Paris 2024, we find out how much hosts have paid out to stage the Olympics, and whether returns they earned were worth it. And in our article on European football teams, we compare the revenues and wage costs of the ‘big five’ league clubs.

Continuing the football theme, this month’s interview is with John Young ACCA, CFO of the Football Association of Wales, who sees exciting times ahead for the sport in his home nation.

As the new government mulls over what it will do address the significant funding shortfalls it has ‘uncovered’, Robert Bruce looks at how taxation was explained to the population during World War 2, and the lessons today’s politicians could take from these albeit very different times.

One of the first things the new government announced – as part of the King’s Speech – was to go ahead with the audit reforms that had been postponed under the previous administration. While it remains unclear what the future is for the wider reporting requirements on risk and resilience, audit and assurance and anti-fraud measures, we know that the coming draft Audit Reform and Corporate Governance Bill will include a new regulator – the Audit, Reporting and Governance Authority – to replace the existing Financial Reporting Council, with brand-new powers over auditors and, potentially, company directors. Gavin Hinks looks at the detail.

We also look at the opportunities there are for accountants who are keen to develop a deep understanding of data and technology. And, if this month’s reading has inspired you to find out where your skills and experiences might take you, then take a look at our career paths special edition
