I started my career a decade ago after graduating from the University of Auckland. I embarked on my professional journey with a focus on audit, driven by a desire to gain exposure to diverse industries and establish a solid foundation. Initially, I envisioned dedicating three years to fulfilling the ACCA practical experience requirements. However, nine years later, I find myself still fully engaged in this dynamic field, with no regrets about the path I’ve chosen.

What attracted me to finance and professional services, particularly audit, is the fast-paced, constantly evolving nature of the industry. Throughout my career, spanning various industries, each audit has presented new challenges that have kept me intellectually stimulated and engaged. I’ve come to realise that a successful audit goes beyond number crunching; it requires a deep understanding of the business, its operations and the industry landscape to ensure financial accuracy and integrity.

I’ve had opportunities to experiment with innovative solutions, leveraging technology to enhance efficiency

Currently serving as a senior manager in audit at EY, I relish the diverse exposure and opportunities this role affords. Apart from my initial interest in the automotive industry, I found myself immersed in the oil and gas sector, a pivot that ultimately broadened my expertise across multiple industries, including construction, plantation and manufacturing. Also known as the ‘tech guy’ within my department, I’ve had opportunities to experiment with new innovative solutions, leveraging technology to enhance audit efficiency and effectiveness in an ever-changing digital landscape.

The ACCA qualification and its network of professionals have been instrumental in my career growth. While university education provided breadth, ACCA professional papers offered depth, equipping me with the confidence and knowledge to navigate complex accounting issues and engage effectively with clients. The challenging three-year journey of attending ACCA classes as a part-time student, thanks to sponsorship from the firm, proved transformative, instilling in me the necessary edge and confidence to tackle real-world accounting challenges.

My proudest moments stem from upholding professional values amid complex challenges

My career journey has been shaped by various influences, primarily the leaders I’ve had the privilege to work with. Each imparted invaluable lessons, contributing to my professional and personal growth. My proudest moments stem not from technical achievements but from upholding professional values amid complex challenges, knowing that I have a strong support system upholding the same values.

Looking ahead, my aspirations revolve around fostering excellence in those around me and continuing to uphold the values instilled in me throughout my career. At work, I aspire to bring out the best in my colleagues, just as my mentors have done for me in the past.

Despite the demands of my career, family time remains a priority at weekends. It provides a well-deserved break and an opportunity to recharge for the challenges ahead. In both professional and personal spheres, I seek to maintain a balance that nurtures growth, fulfilment and wellbeing.
