My inspiration to work in finance stemmed from a passion for numbers and problem-solving, and I also wanted a crucial role in the financial integrity and strategic planning of organisations. I began my career at PwC, where I supported audit for clients in German-speaking countries. This role gave me the opportunity to travel to Hamburg, collaborate with local auditors and assist in opening a new hub in Istanbul.

Currently, I work for Koch Industries, a global US-based company. I focus on analysing and reconciling differences between US GAAP and German GAAP, but also carry out many other tasks.

I stepped out of my comfort zone when my previous employer introduced several programmes at universities. I decided to get involved by conducting workshops for the students, which were designed to demonstrate how proficiency in German business language could enhance their careers. This required me to leave the office and engage directly with students, a challenge that broadened my communication and presentation skills.

I gained a deeper understanding of cultural nuances, which is crucial in international business

My ability with languages and translation, particularly German, has been invaluable in my accounting career. My studies focused on Polish-German translation in law and economics, providing a solid foundation in specialised terminology. While at a language institution in Mannheim, I improved my language skills and gained a deeper understanding of cultural nuances, which is crucial in international business.

My lexicographic studies honed my attention to detail, allowing me to spot errors accurately, which has been particularly beneficial for me. My work preparing financials under German GAAP is seamless and I can easily communicate with the German tax office, which facilitates smoother interactions.

The oil and gas industry will continue to play a vital role in the global energy sector

The oil and gas industry will continue to play a vital role in the global energy sector, even though it faces significant challenges, including environmental concerns and stricter regulations. Market volatility, driven by geopolitical events and fluctuating demand due to the rise of renewables, adds to the uncertainty. The industry also faces ageing infrastructure and struggles with attracting skilled labour, while digital transformation will require significant investment. However, there are also exciting opportunities. Renewable energy is a major growth area, with many companies investing in wind, solar and hydrogen projects. Digital transformation is offering opportunities through advanced AI and analytics, and innovations in energy efficiency are maximising production from existing resources.

What I enjoy most about my job is working in international business, which gives me an overview of various industries and markets. I also relish collaborating with people from different countries and cultures, as it enriches my perspective. Working with languages is another highlight as it allows me to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders. The dynamic and diverse nature of my work is incredibly rewarding, too, and I enjoy the constant growth it offers.

My favourite quote is: ‘It’s not always about the destination; make the journey count’

If I had law-making powers, I would prohibit discrimination around race, gender, disability, religion, sexual orientation or age, in all aspects of employment, while promoting fairness and accountability in the workplace.

My favourite quote is: ‘It’s not always about the destination; make the journey count.’ This reminds me to appreciate lessons gained along the way, instead of only focusing on the specific goal. It also encourages mindfulness and gratitude.

If I weren’t working in finance, I would have pursued a career as a translator, perhaps in Brussels or an international communications office. This career would have allowed me to leverage my language skills and interest in international relations.

Outside work, I have a passion for travel and dance. Exploring new places is something I deeply enjoy, and recently I got to see the musical Chicago in New York City, a dream come true for me.
