My favourite quote comes from the management consultant, Peter Drucker: ‘The best way to predict the future is to create it.’ This resonates with me as it emphasises the importance of proactive planning, innovation and taking the initiative, which are the principles that have guided my career.

Stepping out of my comfort zone has been a recurring theme throughout my career, particularly when I decided to transition from EY to engage in independent consultancy work. This shift demanded adaptability, resilience and a proactive approach to managing diverse projects. This experience has been instrumental in my professional growth and enhanced my ability to lead effectively.

Over the past 17 years, I have also worked as a professional mentor, collaborating with various universities and professional bodies including Oxford Brookes University, the University of London and ACCA. Unlike in-house or volunteer mentoring, professional mentoring is a dedicated and systematic process; this structured approach ensures targeted development which is tailored to the needs of each student. Guiding students and seeing them achieve their academic and career goals brings me a sense of accomplishment and purpose which keeps me motivated and intellectually stimulated.

What I find most satisfying about my role is the diversity and impact of my work

My inspiration to become an accountant came from my early interest in numbers and financial systems, combined with the strong professional reputation of the profession. I started my career at EY in 2007 and in the same year completed my ACCA. I then took a BSc (Hons) degree in applied accounting from Oxford Brookes University.

What I find most satisfying about my role is the diversity and impact of my work. I enjoy addressing and finding solutions to complex challenges, while also getting to collaborate with government bodies and renowned organisations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and Unicef, which broadens my perspective. My current position centres on an initiative within Afghanistan’s Ministry of Public Health, funded by the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (Gavi), and involves the development of immunisation budgets for future years, ensuring these align with programme goals. It’s immensely satisfying to contribute to such a worthy goal.

Working as a development sector consultant for EY in Afghanistan involves applying accounting expertise to enhance financial management, accountability and economic development. Accountants play a crucial role in ensuring transparent use of international aid, developing budgets, and advising on economic policies and tax reforms. By strengthening public financial management systems and conducting rigorous audits, they combat corruption and promote governance.

Trained accountants contribute significantly to improving financial integrity in Afghanistan

Accountants also contribute to capacity building by training local professionals, so they can go on to manage finances independently. In a complex environment like Afghanistan, trained accountants contribute significantly to improving financial integrity, efficiency and development outcomes, supporting progress towards stability and growth.

If I had law-making powers, I would prioritise environmental protection through stringent climate policies. I would also promote social justice with laws ensuring equality, fair treatment and enhanced transparency, which would then combat corruption. By reforming education, we would improve its accessibility and quality. All these measures aim to foster a more sustainable, equitable and secure society for all.

If I weren’t an accountant, I would have been interested in a career in technology and innovation, such as data science or software engineering. I’m drawn to roles that involve problem-solving and analytical thinking, and I would enjoy leveraging technology to drive positive change.

When I am not at work, I enjoy hiking and exploring nature trails, which helps me unwind and stay physically active. I also have a passion for reading non-fiction books, particularly about history and technology. Additionally, I enjoy spending time with family and friends. These hobbies allow me to recharge and maintain a balanced lifestyle outside of my work.
