Accountancy can open doors to careers that are not only professionally fulfilling but also invaluable in daily life. My genuine interest in numbers led me to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce in accounting. During my university years, my career aspirations became clearer. I developed a keen interest in becoming a professional accountant. To achieve this, I decided to undertake the ACCA qualification. After graduating, one of my lecturers recommended me for a qualification programme sponsored by EY Singapore. That opportunity kick-started my career.

Starting my auditing career as a fresh graduate was a challenge. I vividly recall those early months when I felt lost and even contemplated quitting. But I had this mentor – a wise soul. He told me: ‘Patience is like headlights in the darkness: it only reveals a few steps ahead, but with perseverance, one can travel great distances.’ Those words transformed my perspective. I realised that I didn’t need to see the entire path – taking one step at a time was enough. I still carry that advice with me. Sometimes, the simplest words hold the deepest wisdom.

Working in auditing pushes me to perform beyond my limits, but it’s where I grow the most

At EY Singapore, the learning experience has been exceptional, driven by two key factors. First is the deep learning curve: working in auditing at EY consistently pushes me to learn new things and perform beyond my limits, but it’s where I grow the most. Second is the dynamic nature of work: our assignments cover various company sizes, types and industries. From technology to large non-profit organizations, I’ve gained valuable exposure. Not only did I acquire exceptional audit experiences, but the supportive leadership also played a pivotal role in shaping my professional journey.

ACCA has been crucial for my professional growth. It not only offered me the necessary theoretical knowledge and technical skills for auditing but also propelled my professional credibility worldwide. Beyond auditing, it improved my ability to understand and analyse numbers, especially in valuation and financial analysis. On top of this, the ACCA network has been a great asset, allowing me to develop meaningful professional connections through mentorship and learning from best-in-class professionals. As someone who enjoys making friends, I have found the ACCA community a great platform for expanding my connections and diversifying my communication skills. I’ve been able to meet and interact with ACCA professionals from various industries and countries, which has been incredibly fulfilling.

I dream of globe-trotting, sampling croissants in Paris, sushi in Japan and kimchi in Seoul

In business, I am aiming to gain more experience and expertise in valuation and to deepen my understanding and proficiency in strategic aspects that drive innovation and progress. Outside of work, I aspire to engage in meaningful efforts, such as assisting those in need and making a positive impact on the community. I do love to join volunteer activities organised by the EY Ripples corporate responsibility programme.

When I’m not crunching numbers, I’m about staying active. Yoga, the gym, badminton and cycling – those are my go-to moves. Food and coffee are my love languages too. Weekends mean flavour exploration – I’m on a taste adventure. I also dream of globe-trotting, sampling croissants in Paris, sushi in Japan and kimchi in Seoul. Friends and flavour, that’s the winning combo. I think that the balance of intellectual and physical activities is important, because life is too short to skip either.
