In Pakistan when I was growing up, career options were limited, which steered me towards accountancy. I was always drawn to the world of business and finance, though, and enjoy the challenge of numbers and problem solving. Having gained experience with major financial institutions in Pakistan, I now focus on ESG advisory at Crowe Oman in Muscat, where I am able to combine my financial expertise with a passion for sustainability.

Traditionally, clients have sought traditional financial advisory services, but a seismic shift is under way. ESG and sustainability are rapidly becoming global concerns, and clients in financial services recognise this. They understand the importance of ESG principles but often lack the knowledge or resources to apply them, so there is significant demand for guidance on ESG issues and how to build sustainable practices. This allows businesses to fulfil their ESG commitments but also potentially creates new opportunities in the green economy.

Interacting with diverse teams and meeting new people broadens my perspective

I believe that calculated risks are essential for growth. It was my passion for ESG that drew me to Crowe Oman. I left a stable banking career for this role and stepped outside my comfort zone as I relocated to a new country. This meant leaving behind the familiar, saying goodbye to my friends and family, and starting a new network from scratch.

I enjoy the variety and challenge my role offers. I work on multiple projects across different industries, and thrive on interacting with diverse teams and meeting new people – it all broadens my perspective. Travelling for work is a bonus that allows me to experience new cultures and expand my professional network, and I’ve also developed new skills at work like public speaking. Delivering workshops on ESG topics for the Muscat Stock Exchange has been an especially rewarding experience and an opportunity to showcase my expertise.

It may be an accounting cliché but my favourite quote is: what gets measured, gets managed. A measurable approach is key to achieving success, both professionally and personally. Just as there are clear metrics in ESG, so tracking progress in fitness, learning or savings keeps me focused and motivated when outside of work.

My ultimate goal is to be a leader driving positive change in ESG. With a passion for sustainability, I want to deepen my expertise in consulting, potentially specialising in areas such as climate risk management. The beauty of this field lies in its constant evolution. I’m excited to see where the ESG space goes.

By helping businesses operate sustainably, I contribute to a healthier environment for all

If I had law-making powers, I’d prioritise incentives for businesses to invest in renewable energy. Given a free hand, I’d also mandate ESG reporting to boost transparency, implement ‘just transition’ programmes and invest in green infrastructure to create jobs. In all this, collaboration between governments, businesses and communities is essential for lasting impact.

If I wasn’t an accountant, I might well have been an architect. I was drawn to architecture from a young age. However, healthcare could just as well have been an alternative path, as contributing to a better world remains a core value for me. In my present role, though, I can still make a difference, as by helping businesses operate sustainably I contribute to a healthier environment and society for all.

When I’m not working, I enjoy watching live sport and movies. Exploring new places is another passion, especially road trips where I can set the pace and soak up the scenery. Recently, fatherhood has taken centre-stage, and quality time with my daughter is my greatest joy. We love going out, where she can take in the sights and sounds of the world.
