Rwanda is a nation brimming with potential. By addressing its challenges and investing in its people and the economy, the country is poised for a bright future.

I was motivated to pursue a career in accounting as I wanted to contribute to Rwanda’s economic development by helping to build strong financial practices. I saw the profession as key to understanding a business’s health and potential, and I have always been fascinated by financial analysis.

I started my career as an audit trainee with Deloitte Rwanda in 2009. Since then, I’ve steadily progressed through various roles, gaining extensive experience. In 2023 I moved to my current role as partner in charge of risk advisory services at BDO East Africa. Here, I lead a team that helps businesses navigate potential risks, helping to promote financial stability and growth. I also head the firm’s tax practice.

Seeing the positive impact my work has on our clients’ success is truly rewarding

What I enjoy most about my job is the challenge of solving complex problems and thereby helping businesses make informed decisions. Seeing the positive impact my work has on our clients’ success is truly rewarding.

As a partner I now focus on leadership, strategy and business development while overseeing a team, which is quite different from my previous roles. To be a successful partner you require strong communication skills, vision and the ability to build relationships with clients and colleagues.

Rwanda has witnessed remarkable progress in recent years, but challenges remain. As it is landlocked by geography, the country faces higher import and export costs than those with access to the ocean, which hinders economic growth.

Despite this, Rwanda has significant potential for future prosperity. The government has made heavy investments in technology and is helping to transform the capital Kigali into a hub for tech startups. This is creating jobs and propelling Rwanda into the global tech arena. Furthermore, there is breathtaking scenery and unique wildlife, which position Rwanda perfectly for more growth in nature-based tourism.

Rwanda’s flourishing financial services sector emphasises mobile banking and financial inclusion

There is also a flourishing financial services sector, which by emphasising mobile banking and financial inclusion is empowering businesses and individuals alike. The Kigali International Financial Centre further bolsters Rwanda’s financial landscape.

My favourite quote comes from Abraham Lincoln: ‘The best way to predict the future is to create it.’ This philosophy resonates deeply with me and fuels my proactive approach to my career as I constantly seek growth opportunities.

While I’m proud of my own career progression, I feel my biggest achievement is building and mentoring a talented team that consistently delivers.

If I was in a position to influence the economic environment, I would prioritise legislation that fosters international cooperation. I would like laws establishing frameworks for international collaboration on critical issues like climate change and pandemics. This would allow nations to share resources, expertise and best practices for tackling these shared challenges. I would also like to see treaties promoting peaceful conflict resolution and fair-trade practices. By encouraging dialogue and cooperation, these accords could help prevent wars and create a more just global marketplace.

If I wasn’t an accountant, I’d be drawn to a career in aviation. Flying, a little like accounting, would combine my passion for leadership with the thrill of guiding a team towards a shared destination.

When I am not at work, I unwind by spending time with my family and friends. I also enjoy exploring Rwanda’s beautiful scenery and staying active through sport.
