I launched my career as an audit assistant within the financial services division of a Big Four firm. This was a springboard to a rich tapestry of learning experiences. The Big Four environment epitomises knowledge leadership and is synonymous with unparalleled opportunities for professional development.
After three dynamic years in audit, I embarked on an internal transition. I moved to transaction services, immersing myself in more than 70 M&A transactions.
I serve as manager of the strategic investments and business development department at Olam, a listed company in Singapore. My role focuses on driving business expansion through organic growth and M&A activities. What I find most rewarding is the opportunity to engage with diverse stakeholders, each bringing unique perspectives, from commercial teams navigating market dynamics to legal and sustainability teams evaluating strategic implications. One transaction I’m particularly proud of is an acquisition in Australia, which demonstrated the effectiveness of our strategic approach and collaboration across departments and countries.
Every move required me to step out of my comfort zone
The ACCA qualification has been pivotal in shaping my career as a financial professional. Its comprehensive curriculum – from accounting to corporate finance and strategy – has equipped me with a solid foundation. What sets ACCA apart is its commitment to continuous learning, ensuring I stay abreast of industry trends.
Beyond knowledge, ACCA has been instrumental in expanding my professional network through meetups, workshops and the ACCA Toastmasters Club. This network has enriched my perspective and opened doors to collaborative opportunities globally. ACCA serves as a global career passport, validating my expertise and facilitating seamless exploration of international opportunities. It has been a cornerstone in my professional journey, enabling me to confidently navigate diverse financial landscapes.
One of my proudest achievements has been transitioning across various service lines within a Big Four firm, and from a consultant to an in-house M&A professional in a corporate setting. Every move required me to step out of my comfort zone, take on new challenges and acquire additional skills in financial analysis, negotiation and strategic planning.
I strongly believe in the transformative power of education
In my spare time, I enjoy outdoor activities with my family and friends, such as cycling at East Coast Park, taking morning walks in Singapore Botanic Gardens, or exploring trails at MacRitchie Reservoir. Weekends are precious opportunities for me to reconnect with nature and recharge both mentally and physically. Engaging in these activities helps me maintain a healthy work-life balance and rejuvenates my energy for the week ahead.
If I weren’t an accountant, I’d likely have pursued a career in education. I strongly believe in the transformative power of education, both for individuals and communities. Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to experience countless learning opportunities through ACCA and my employers, which have shaped my fulfilling journey to date. I believe my skills in financial analysis and strategic thinking would translate well into shaping future generations through education.
