I was part of the science set at high school, but at university I discovered that my real passion lay elsewhere. After consulting with family, friends and people working in many different fields, I realised that accounting is the backbone of all businesses and was hooked on the idea of a career in that environment. I have never looked back. No other career has ever interested me. If I could turn back time, I would still choose a career in audit!
Since joining audit at EY, I have been continuously challenging myself by assuming new tasks and roles. I do this intentionally, as I don’t want to fall into a comfort zone that will limit my development. I make sure to work with different clients and engagements, in different offices and across a variety of service lines.
The need for constant learning keeps me fresh and engaged
I’m new to the role of partner, but I already feel a heavier weight of responsibility and expectation. As a partner, I am an important business adviser to my clients, and I like working closely with them to understand their aspirations and then help them achieve them.
AI is a great challenge, both for me and for the audit profession. The responsible and ethical use of AI will help audit become ever more effective, especially as expectations placed on auditors are constantly increasing. However, if your audit clients are using AI in an inappropriate way, the risks you need to address will be substantially higher.
I spend a significant amount of time meeting new people, both clients and teammates. It usually involves addressing challenges, which is something I have aways enjoyed. I also appreciate the need for constant learning, which comes with the territory in audit. All this together helps keep me fresh and engaged, ready to get up every day to go out and enjoy my work.
My favourite saying is that hard work pays off – I have certainly found that it does!
My most joyful moments have arisen from contributing to positive change
I have often thought about what really drives me in my life. It has led to the realisation that my most joyful moments have arisen from occasions where I contributed to a positive change. That’s perfect for my role, where I contribute to different decisions for clients that result in a positive change to their business.
When I’m not working, I like to spend time with my friends. I also enjoy reading about history, watching movies and keeping healthy by regularly doing CrossFit.
