I’m a business analyst at DBS. I serve as a vital bridge between finance and technology teams, facilitating collaboration among stakeholders and driving change. Witnessing the realisation of our collective efforts is rewarding. From collective feedback to implementing the solution, it is a joy when stakeholders are empowered with insights to make better decisions or progress.

A large corporate bank comes with a large organisational structure, so making changes to crossfunctional teams can take time. That is a challenge against a backdrop of rapid technological and environmental change. I need to be able to narrate the story of change, influence through storytelling, suffer setbacks, collect feedback, reorganise and even reconvince myself at times.

Numbers shine the light on the best decisions and directions

Effective communication and garnering support from stakeholders are key to overcoming change challenges. Not everyone is the same; it’s been a great pleasure and an inspiration to meet crossfunctional colleagues who are willing to hear problems and share their stories and experiences.

I was attracted to finance and accounting for its practicality and applicability in day-to-day and professional life. The power of numbers plays a special role; while theories and forecasts come with assumptions and estimates, numbers shine the light on the best decisions and directions.

The ACCA qualification was the light at the end of my tunnel when I changed career from the creative industry. I wouldn’t be where I am today without ACCA. DBS is an approved employer of ACCA too, which adds to the value and recognition. The ACCA network has also been invaluable, providing a platform for professional growth, knowledge sharing and networking with other finance professionals. I joined an interest group with ACCA Singapore Toastmasters Club to develop effective communication and leadership skills. Having served as club president for two terms, it was a great opportunity to contribute and connect with fellow ACCA professionals.

A great bunch of people helped me to believe in myself

I’ve been fortunate to work with several great people throughout my career. Early on, at NCS, Ka Hock offered and endorsed my work with the regional finance team. His kind words affirmed that ACCA was the right path. Samantha and Yeeling at SingTel showed me the world of treasury and the importance of liquidity – cash is king. Christopher and Moon Shary at Providend opened my mind to a different business model with vision and compassion. A great bunch of people at Protiviti helped me to believe in myself.

If I weren’t an accountant, I might have been a hiker, scaling mountains. Only half joking aside, perhaps I’d have been a psychologist or counsellor. Key pillars for change are stakeholders, people and their behaviour.
