I began my career as an accounts executive right after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in accountancy. However, I quickly realised it wasn’t the right fit for me, so I decided to study ACCA full time. This led me to transition into audit in 2010 in Singapore, a career move that truly aligned with my interests and aspirations.
My passion for finance was initially sparked by my love for numbers and financial analysis. However, a significant source of inspiration came from observing my mother, who worked as a regional finance manager. Watching her interact with auditors and navigate complex financial situations left a lasting impression. Her professionalism and the strategic approach she took in managing financial matters deepened my interest in the field, and particularly drew me to the role of an auditor.
I enjoy the opportunity to delve deeply into the rationale behind various standards and requirement
After seven years as an auditor, I transitioned into a technical role where I focus on understanding and applying complex standards and regulations. I particularly enjoy the opportunity to delve deeply into the rationale behind various standards and requirements. I find it rewarding to contribute to and enhance our financial reporting environment, ensuring that our practices remain current and effective.
I interact with auditors from various backgrounds as well as with advisory clients. A key challenge is effectively communicating complex accounting requirements to individuals who may not have a strong accounting background, so I find it incredibly fulfilling when auditors and clients grasp these requirements and apply them appropriately. The process of bridging the gap between technical accounting standards and practical understanding is both inspiring and rewarding, as it helps ensure that financial reporting is accurate and transparent.
The ACCA network has provided ongoing support and opportunities for growth
The ACCA qualification has been instrumental in shaping my career, particularly in the areas of knowledge and professional development. I found the financial reporting module especially valuable, laying a solid foundation for applying accounting standards to the preparation of financial statements. The module equipped me with technical analysis and interpretation skills, which are crucial in my current role. Additionally, the ACCA network has provided ongoing support and opportunities for growth, further enhancing my expertise and career development.
In my spare time, especially weekends, I enjoy spending quality time with my family and friends. I also make a point of attending Zumba and yoga classes regularly. I believe that maintaining a well-rested mind and body significantly enhances my productivity and overall efficiency at work.
If I weren’t an accountant, I might have pursued a career as a chemical engineer. This was a strong alternative for me when I was deciding on my field of study after secondary education.
