Shortly after completing my high school education, I embarked on my professional journey at the Ministry of Defence in Gibraltar, where I was employed as a payments clerk. It was during this formative period that my fascination with the financial profession began to take root. Recognising my desire for greater professional challenges, I pursued qualifications in accounting, undertaking studies in both the AAT and ACCA certifications.
Following my time at the MoD, I transitioned into the role of an auditor. Here I gained invaluable experience in financial scrutiny and compliance. After several years in this capacity, I ventured into the realm of financial accounting, further broadening my expertise. Today, I hold the position of client accounting supervisor at Octopus International Business Services Ltd, while also managing my own accounting practice, LM Accounting Ltd. Balancing these dual roles has allowed me to cultivate a harmonious work-life dynamic, enabling me to advance my professional aspirations while nurturing my family life.
LM Accounting Ltd required me to step far beyond my comfort zone, assuming roles that extended beyond traditional accounting
Gibraltar’s robust business environment has been a cornerstone of my career. Its strategic geographical location provides unparalleled access to UK, European, and global markets, while its favourable tax policies, stable legal framework, and well-developed financial sector create a fertile ground for business growth. The jurisdiction also boasts a high concentration of skilled professionals, further enhancing its appeal as a business hub.
However, the UK’s departure from the EU due to Brexit has introduced a degree of uncertainty for Gibraltar-based businesses, particularly regarding regulatory frameworks and cross-border mobility. At Octopus International Business Services Ltd, we specialise in helping businesses navigate these challenges, transforming potential obstacles into opportunities for growth and adaptation to turn this negative process into a positive one.
A defining moment in my career was the establishment of my own accounting practice, LM Accounting Ltd. This venture required me to step far beyond my comfort zone, assuming roles that extended beyond traditional accounting. To meet regulatory requirements, I undertook additional studies to become a Money Laundering Reporting Officer. I am currently furthering my professional development by pursuing a certification in Gibraltar tax law. This entrepreneurial endeavour has been both challenging and deeply rewarding, representing a lifelong ambition realised.
During my ACCA studies, I took a one-year sabbatical from full-time employment to immerse myself in postgraduate life in London. Having never attended university, this experience allowed me to fulfil a personal aspiration and gain a deeper appreciation for academic rigour and student life. It was a transformative period that enriched both my professional and personal growth.
I would prioritise the implementation of comprehensive digital literacy and online safety legislation within the educational curriculum
One of my guiding principles is encapsulated in a quote by Benjamin Franklin: ‘Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today’. This philosophy underscores my belief in the importance of seizing the day, opportunities, and investing in one’s future through diligent effort and perseverance. I am unafraid of hard work, particularly when it aligns with a clear and meaningful goal.
What I find most fulfilling about my profession is the opportunity to gain insight into the diverse operational frameworks of various businesses. My career has also afforded me the privilege of engaging with numerous accomplished business owners and professionals, from whom I have drawn immense inspiration and knowledge.
Among my most significant achievements are the completion of my ACCA qualification and the successful establishment of LM Accounting Ltd. These milestones represent not only professional accomplishments but also personal triumphs that reflect my commitment to growth and excellence.
If I had law-making powers, I would prioritise the implementation of comprehensive digital literacy and online safety legislation within the educational curriculum. This initiative would mandate the teaching of critical skills such as digital privacy, information evaluation and ethical online behaviour. In an era dominated by social media, misinformation and cyber threats, equipping future generations with these competencies is essential for fostering responsible and informed digital citizenship online.
If I wasn’t an accountant, I believe I would have pursued a career in marketing. I would thoroughly enjoy the creative freedom, as the strategic thinking inherent in this field align closely with my interests and strengths.
As a dedicated working mother, my greatest joy lies in spending quality time with my family. When time permits, I also enjoy weight training and jogging, activities that provide both physical and mental rejuvenation.
