Growing up, I was always interested in figures. However, my brother entering the world of finance and my parents struggling with that aspect of their business further opened my eyes to accountancy.

My first job in finance was as a cashier, before becoming an accounting clerk. My breakthrough came when I was promoted to financial accountant and then to chief accountant three years later. My current role is group credit and collections manager at RJRGleaner Communications Group, Jamaica’s leading media company.

Jamaica media companies are facing similar challenges as international media

Jamaica media companies are undergoing significant transformation with the industry facing challenges similar to that of their global counterparts. Market share has been eroded by new content providers. These new mediums are able to push information quicker and faster than traditional media. There seem to be no significant repercussions for them, unlike that of traditional media who are held accountable for the information that is shared by them. Traditional platforms such as cable companies, free-to-air and print are seeing decline in advertising and distribution revenues.

To remain competitive, media businesses must adapt and innovate as investing in content that appeals to a global audience is crucial. The lack of innovation has left many media companies vulnerable, so it is imperative that we prioritise new ideas and diversification for the long-term sustainability of our industry.

I stepped out of my comfort zone when I was offered promotion to financial accountant. I was uncomfortable, as one of the ACCA papers I struggled with was Managing People; indeed, I attempted the exam three times. I was concerned because I thought that if I could not pass that particular paper, how would I be able to supervise a staff of more than 10 people? However, when I was promoted, I just had to step out of my comfort zone and manage.

The world is full of challenges, but when you are down, don’t stay down

My favourite quote is from 2 Corinthians 4:8: ‘We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed but not destroyed.’ This tells me that the world is full of challenges, but when you are down, don’t stay down.

What I enjoy most about my role is working as part of a team. I have had the opportunity to lead several teams, despite considering myself very reserved. However, it showed me that I love interacting with different people, which also extends to my personal life.

My biggest achievement was when I was chosen as president of a credit union. I had a term of three years, having been the treasurer for several years before that.

If I had law-making powers, I would simplify the tax system, which would enhance voluntary compliance and build trust in our tax obligations. Jamaica’s tax laws can seem overwhelming and, with an average of 29% deducted from salaries and an additional 15% VAT, it can feel excessive. However, if we could clearly see the benefits of these contributions, it would increase satisfaction with our tax responsibilities. This is particularly relevant for those in Jamaica’s formal sector, especially considering the significant size of the informal sector.

If I was not in finance, I would love to work in customer service, as this has always been important to me and is lacking in many places. Project management also appeals to me as I have seen many inefficiencies over the years, which has shown me how value can be added if the project is managed correctly.

In my spare time I love to read, and I was once an avid netball player but eventually had to give it up. However, I’m looking forward to catching up on my reading in 2025.
