Failure isn’t the opposite of success but a stepping stone towards it. Taking risks and embracing challenges are essential for growth. As the writer JK Rowling said: ‘It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all – in which case you fail by default.’

Moving from Dhaka to Dubai is the usual direction of travel, but I went the other way. I was born and raised in Dubai, and gained audit experience there with KPMG before moving to Dhaka to join a local firm, Snehasish Mahmud. It was difficult adjusting to a new professional environment, culture and way of working, but I had supportive colleagues, and the experience strengthened my ability to embrace change and face new challenges.

I thrive on my role, as every day presents new learning opportunities

Being a dutiful daughter, I had followed my parents’ advice to pursue ACCA. However, I love problem-solving and analytical thinking and am incredibly grateful for their guidance, as it has led me to a career that is fulfilling and rewarding. Now, as a consultant at the World Bank, I get to work on projects that contribute to economic development and financial transparency. I thrive on the dynamic nature of the role, as every day presents new learning opportunities.

If I weren’t a finance professional, I’d have pursued an academic career in physics. I love how physics explains the fundamental workings of the universe. Researching and teaching it at a university would be so fulfilling, allowing me to explore complex concepts further.

Mandatory mental health support would lead to a more productive society

If I could pass a law, it would be to make mental health support mandatory in workplaces and educational institutions. Mental health is just as important as physical health, yet often doesn’t receive the attention it deserves. Organisations should provide access to counselling services and awareness programmes to create a supportive environment. Schools and universities should integrate mental health education into their curriculum, equipping young people with the tools to manage emotional wellbeing from an early age. It would lead to a healthier, more productive society.

In my spare time I am an avid reader. I love unwinding and fuelling my imagination by immersing myself in fiction. I also greatly enjoy travelling, discovering new places and experiencing different cultures.
