What I enjoy most about working in the energy sector is that it plays a crucial role in powering our world. Contributing to an essential resource for millions of people is also very rewarding. The sector is also at the forefront of technological advancements. Dealing with complex projects, such as renewable energy solutions, offers me constant excitement. The sector also offers a wide range of career paths, which allows for personal growth and the chance to explore different areas.

I began my career with a bank in Trinidad and Tobago, but after eight years I joined one of the Big Four firms. Then wanting a new challenge, I decided to move into the energy sector, where I have now worked for almost 20 years. I chose a career in accounting and finance because of the dynamic nature of financial markets, the opportunity to solve complex problems, and the analytical nature of the work.

Developing new gas fields is crucial to Trinidad and Tobago’s economy. The country relies heavily on its energy sector for revenue, employment and foreign exchange earnings. As existing gas fields mature, new investments are essential to maintain and increase gas production levels, which is vital for our economic stability and growth. The National Gas Company of Trinidad and Tobago plays a significant role in these investments and is involved in various key upstream projects.

Education is fundamental to personal and societal growth

I stepped out of my comfort zone when I transitioned to the energy sector. This shift required me to develop new expertise in project management, environmental science, renewable energy technologies, fossil fuels and the wider management of energy resources.

My favourite quotes comes from Albert Einstein. He said: ‘Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.’ I like this because it emphasises the importance of perseverance, no matter what the challenge.

If I had law-making powers, I would focus on legislation that promotes education and improving access to technology in education. Education is fundamental to personal and societal growth, while access to technology helps reduce inequality and is essential for future jobs. New laws would help bridge the digital divide and ensure that everyone has the tools needed in a technology-driven world.

Every interaction is an opportunity for me to make a positive impact

One of my biggest achievements is completing my ACCA qualification, which has presented me with enormous career opportunities. Helping my colleagues to solve personal or career challenges is also very rewarding. Whether it’s giving support for projects, or simply having conversations, every interaction is an opportunity for me to make a positive impact. This continuous journey of assisting and connecting with students and fellow members is something of which I’m very proud.

If I wasn’t in finance, a career as an entrepreneur would have fascinated me. I think that many entrepreneurs are driven by a deep passion and starting a business allows you to turn that passion into a career. I feel many entrepreneurs have a desire to make a positive impact on society through creating jobs, improving products, and addressing social and environmental issues, which is a powerful way to contribute to the greater good.

Outside work I enjoy exercise and sports, especially running, the gym and squash. I like exploring new places and cultures. I am also a great believer in learning new skills, whether it’s taking up a new language, learning to code or volunteering. I am currently a member of the Trinidad and Tobago local ACCA Chapter.
