In our main interview this month we meet Yogesh Kissoondary FCCA, head of corporate finance at Mauritius conglomerate CIEL Group. Having spent more than a decade in the UK working with US and European clients, he is now happy to be back in Africa, contributing to the private sector of his native country.

Also fulfilling key finance roles in markets on the continent are the winners of ACCA’s latest Africa CFO Awards. Working in industries from banking to manufacturing, construction and healthcare in Cameroon, Kenya, Uganda and Zambia, they give their take on the skills, attributes and attitudes essential for success in the role.

Countries across Africa are at various stages of implementing International Public Sector Accounting Standards. In our article we look at IPSAS progress in two of Africa’s largest economies, Nigeria and Kenya, where government entities are grappling with the transition from cash accounting to the accrual system, highlighting the challenges hampering this complex transformation in public financial management.

Finally, if the new year has inspired you to update your skills for today’s workplace, our columnist Okey Umeano FCCA explores ACCA’s certificate courses and offers tips for studying while working.
