I thrive on challenges and stepping out of my comfort zone. It was a transformative experience when I travelled on my first solo trip, which took me across multiple countries, encountering language barriers and even getting lost a few times. This experience taught me resilience and ignited in me a deep passion for solo travel. What was once anxiety-inducing is now a source of excitement and adventure.

Internal audit  plays a vital role in driving organisational excellence. As internal auditors, we are uniquely positioned to assess the organisation from a comprehensive, bird’s-eye perspective. This enables us to identify potential challenges and empowers us to provide recommendations that help the organisation tackle any problem and achieve its goals more effectively. At my organisation, for example, the internal audit function plays a crucial role in adding value to technical departments through comprehensive operational audits that evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of internal controls and overall governance. Such audits strengthen the organisation’s core regulatory oversight activities which ultimately benefits the industry as a whole.

I truly believe that our thoughts shape our reality and can drive change in our lives

After taking my final set of ACCA exams, I began my career at KPMG Lower Gulf in the UAE, where I was introduced to the internal audit profession. I later moved to the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation, eventually becoming an internal audit specialist. Throughout my journey, drawing inspiration from everyone I meet, whether peers, seniors or subordinates, has significantly contributed to my career.

My favourite quote is attributed to Mahatma Gandhi: ‘A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes.’ This  reminds me of the immense power of our minds. I truly believe that our thoughts shape our reality and can drive meaningful change in our lives, as our inner dialogue and  beliefs ultimately determine who we are and what we become.

If I had law-making powers in this digital era, I would have legislation that requires individuals, regardless of age, to continually advance their technological knowledge, including in areas such as coding, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. I would also incentivise organisations to invest in employee development programmes focused on fostering a dynamic, innovative and adaptable workforce empowered by technology.

I am motivated by the continuous challenge to be innovative

What I enjoy most about internal audit is the dynamic and varied nature of the work, which spans the entire organisation. I am motivated by the continuous challenge to be innovative, and to identify opportunities to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of processes through my recommendations. This role also provides ample opportunities for both professional and personal growth, allowing me to refine my technical expertise and problem-solving skills.

Among my proudest achievements is being recognised in 2024 as one of the top 15 emerging young leaders globally in the field of internal audit by the Institute of Internal Auditors. I also take pride in having co-authored the inaugural internal audit white paper for the nuclear regulatory community.

If I weren’t a qualified accountant and finance professional, I would have likely pursued a career in teaching, owing to my strong passion for learning and sharing knowledge. I find great fulfilment in delivering informative and creative learning sessions. I could also see myself as a researcher, as my deep curiosity constantly drives me to analyse new methods that can contribute to informed decision-making.

Outside of work, I enjoy adventure activities like canyoning, scuba diving and connecting with nature, which help me to maintain a healthy work-life balance. I especially enjoy travelling and exploring new places. I balance these pursuits with indoor activities such as reading and doing puzzles. I’m also dedicated to volunteering, continuous learning and staying updated on technology trends.
