My affinity for numbers significantly influenced my career. I discovered my specialisation when working in the financial services and insurance sectors as an associate, which encouraged me to excel from the outset. In my current role, I lead diverse teams on various engagements for the firm. To enhance my expertise and maintain a competitive edge, I completed an MSc in financial management. This has been key to my comprehending the complexities of the sector.
I am naturally introverted, so public speaking is not something I jump at. This may seem surprising given that I have been instructing for the firm for over a decade, but I found my first sessions incredibly nerve-wracking. However, stepping out of my comfort zone allowed me to discover a passion for sharing knowledge. My public speaking skills have now developed significantly, which has proven highly beneficial to my career.
AI can offer valuable insights through its unparalleled research capabilities
I believe we risk stagnation if we do not embrace change, even rendering ourselves obsolete. Audit actually stands to gain significantly from integrating artificial intelligence into its daily operations. AI can offer valuable insights to both auditors and clients through its unparalleled research capabilities and efficiency in handling routine tasks. This integration should allow auditors more time to address complex client issues. However, there are inherent drawbacks to any technology, so audit firms must establish comprehensive rules to ensure their use of AI still upholds their standards of quality and credibility.
My favourite saying is: ‘This too shall pass.’ However challenging a situation may appear, it will eventually come to an end. Challenging experiences provide valuable opportunities for learning and growth, ultimately shaping us into the individuals we become. When circumstances seem bleak or discouraging, we know there must be a method that leads to a resolution.
What I enjoy most about my job is the satisfaction I feel in adding value to both my team and clients. I find coaching, being involved in an individual’s career development and witnessing their growth immensely rewarding. Helping my clients enhance their businesses is also highly fulfilling.
The greatest asset of our nation is its people
Trinidad and Tobago is a beautiful twin-island state, distinguished by its diverse population and rich cultural heritage. The greatest asset of our nation is its people, who are recognised for their achievements across the globe. Notably, we have made history with our all-female leadership. Despite challenges related to crime, we remain united through sports, particularly football and cricket, as well as our vibrant culture, exemplified by our world-famous Carnival.
If I had law-making powers, I would make financial literacy mandatory in all schools in Trinidad and Tobago. We condition children to focus on academic or other success, but neglect to teach them how to manage their finances. The vast majority of students leave school without understanding the basics of budgeting or how investing works. Empowering our youth with this knowledge will clearly benefit their own lives but also contribute to the economic growth and resilience of the nation.
If I wasn’t an accountant I would have liked to have been an event planner. I love organising theme parties for my kids and friends, where every detail needs to be just right. From selecting the perfect decorations to planning the entertainment, I enjoy making sure that each event is fun and memorable for everyone.
In my time away from work, I enjoy road trips with my family, exploring our islands’ natural beauty. This always brings me joy and provides a chance to teach my kids about our country’s landscape and history.
