I was inspired to become an accountant when I took up my first job, soon after completing my A Levels. I joined the accounting firm Peat Marwick Mitchell as an audit assistant, even though accounting was completely new to me. However, I soon discovered how much I enjoyed working with numbers and uncovering the story behind financial data. This sparked a genuine interest and laid the foundation for my career in accounting.

Studying for the ACCA qualification then equipped me with technical expertise and also helped me grow as a leader in a rapidly changing financial landscape. After early roles in audit and financial analysis, I moved into more strategic positions, eventually taking on leadership responsibilities. Today, I oversee financial planning and control, reporting and customer service, and work closely with various teams across the business.

St Lucia Electricity Services (LUCELEC) has embraced renewables. We intend to begin construction on a new 10MW solar farm with 13 MW battery storage in early 2026. While we have no confirmed plans for offshore wind farms, Saint Lucia’s broader energy strategy does include wind.

Stepping into a leadership position required me to truly stretch myself

I stepped out of my comfort zone was when I transitioned into the role of CFO. Stepping into a leadership position with strategic responsibilities required me to truly stretch myself. I had to quickly adapt to leading teams, making high-stakes decisions and representing the organisation at the executive level. It was challenging and rewarding, but it taught me the value of embracing discomfort as a catalyst for growth.

What I enjoy most about my job is the opportunity to shape strategic decisions that have a meaningful impact across the organisation. I find great satisfaction in working with numbers for the insights they reveal about performance, risk and opportunity. Whether it’s refining financial planning strategies, reviewing operational efficiencies or leading initiatives to improve customer service, I enjoy the challenge of solving complex problems and driving improvement. I also value collaboration; working closely with my colleagues allows me to contribute to a shared vision while supporting the team’s development.

My favourite quote come from the author Simon Sinek: ‘Leadership is not about being in charge. It’s about taking care of those in your charge.’ This resonates with how I approach team development and decision-making.

Cooking allows for creativity, precision and care – qualities I also value in my current role

If I had law-making powers, I would legislate for greater flexibility in working hours, especially within essential service sectors like energy. This would support work-life balance, improve productivity and help organisations adapt to evolving workforce expectations. Saint Lucia has already made strides in this direction by addressing working hours, holidays and night shifts, but I believe more needs to be done to reflect the realities of modern work.

If I weren’t a finance professional, I would have pursued a career in cookery. I’ve always found joy in creating meals that bring people together. Cooking allows for creativity, precision and care – qualities I also value in my current role. It’s a passion that helps me unwind and express myself in a completely different way.

Outside of work, as well time in my kitchen, I enjoy working out at the gym and gardening. Fitness helps me stay energised and focused, while gardening gives me a sense of calm and creativity. These activities offer a healthy balance to my professional life and allow me to recharge.
