Contrary to many of my peers, my first full-time job was selling an off-the-shelf accounting solution in my hometown, Penang, in Malaysia. I provided software support, but many clients called for accounting clarifications. I then double-hatted, providing training in accounting and bookkeeping, as well as software. This unconventional route exposed me to accounting methodologies and operational practices from different industries, which eventually built the knowledge I have today.

I decided to try my luck in Singapore in 2020 and it’s been quite a journey. I’ve worked my way up at EJ Consultancy Services from a senior accounts executive to deputy general manager. My role has therefore evolved and responsibilities expanded to primarily cover client and staff management. I head three departments with the assistance of two managers, and I’m the firm’s finance and talent manager.

My truthful and honest approach has won my clients’ hearts

A huge part of my work centres on people, which as a self-proclaimed introvert can be a challenge. I was never a ‘salesperson’ – in fact, I’m really bad at selling, and upselling is anathema. If I were appraised by the number of new clients I bring in, any manager would likely fire me. But to my surprise, my truthful and honest approach has won my clients’ hearts. They come to me for advice and in return provide networking and other opportunities. As for my team, I ensure they not only excel at work, but succeed in life. Their careers and personal growth will forever be my greatest career achievement. It’s perhaps the educator in me, but this is by far the best part of my role.

It was, and still is, my goal to become a university lecturer one day, so I did a master’s degree before ACCA. I was hoping to expand my knowledge and help my journey into academia. Little did I realise that being an ACCA member also provides so many networking opportunities. Being part of an internationally recognised association affirms my standing as an accountant in forever competitive Singapore. I’ve witnessed the difference in treatment when speaking as a qualified accountant, further confirming how being a part of ACCA brings weight to my words and professional standing.

I enjoy singing and writing poetry

My mother is my biggest inspiration. At 60, she was recently promoted to branch manager of a multinational corporation despite having no tertiary education. If she is still progressing at 60, I have no excuse. She’s one of the people I go to when I’m facing issues at work, and she comes to me for advice as well. Everyone needs a different perspective from time to time; a seasoned manager like my mother is no exception.

I’m a multihyphenate. I enjoy singing and writing poetry. I’m a self-published writer of two e-books. I enjoy movies and hope to write my own screenplay one day. I’ve also been a keen runner since 2022, though I’m pretty bad at any other sport.
