At Deckers Brands, a growing international footwear and apparel business, no two days are really the same. I can be balancing month-end activities while also working on process improvements, audits or wider business projects. There is always something different happening. What makes the biggest difference, though, is the people. I work in a collaborative and supportive environment with a strong culture of trust and flexibility.

I started my career in finance after moving to the UK from Spain. I wanted a qualification that would be recognised internationally and give me flexibility for the future. ACCA felt like the right choice. Studying while working full time was challenging, but it helped build my confidence and provided the technical knowledge I still rely on today.

With AI taking on routine tasks, the profession is becoming more strategic

I was part of the Deckers team that won Retail Finance Team of the Year at the London and South East Finance Awards. It was a fantastic achievement, but what made it special was its recognition for the collective effort, collaboration and support of an entire team.

Over the next five years, I think finance will continue to evolve into a more analytical and forward-looking profession. As automation and AI take on more routine tasks, finance professionals will spend less time processing information and more time interpreting it, challenging it and helping businesses make better decisions. The profession is becoming more strategic. Strong governance, controls and oversight will remain essential, but finance is increasingly contributing to broader business discussions and long-term planning.

Technology already plays a huge role in my day-to-day work. Recently, I was on a call where AI translated a Spanish conversation into English in real time, which is incredibly impressive. It was a simple but powerful demonstration of how quickly technology is changing the way we work. At the same time, technology cannot replace professional judgment. We still need people who can understand the numbers, challenge assumptions and ensure information is accurate and reliable. Staying ahead is about remaining curious, embracing change and being willing to keep learning.

Some of the most valuable lessons come from conversations rather than textbooks

For anyone starting out in accountancy, my advice would be to stay curious and keep a positive attitude. Technical knowledge is essential, but so are communication skills, adaptability and a willingness to learn. Take opportunities to meet people, attend events and build your network. Some of the most valuable lessons come from conversations and shared experiences rather than textbooks.

Outside work, I like to stay active and keep learning. Whether that is reading, taking courses, hiking, yoga, running or even working on my allotment, I enjoy doing things that are completely different from my day job. Having that balance helps me switch off and recharge.
