I’ve always been drawn to numbers and problem-solving. Both figure large in accounting, which isn’t just about numbers, but understanding what they reveal to support informed decision-making. The balance of logic, precision and real-world impact required is why I pursued an accounting career.

After a few years in corporate and financial services, I spent more than a decade with PwC. I worked in Romania, Mongolia and Canada, leading diverse teams and collaborating with professionals from across the world. As I especially enjoyed working on internal audit projects, I decided to move into internal audit. Now, as director of assurance and advisory at CPP Investments, I’m proud to contribute to strengthening the control environment of the organisation.

Change is an opportunity for growth

What I like most about my job is the opportunity to work alongside and learn from experts across the organisation. I enjoy how every project is a chance to explore and understand key processes and identify ways to strengthen controls. It’s rewarding to know that our work improves efficiency across the business. I also appreciate the diversity of challenges and the sense of teamwork.

I enjoy stepping out of my comfort zone. I’ve studied in Romania, spent two years on a secondment in Mongolia and later emigrated to Canada. Each move came with its own set of cultural, professional and language challenges, which all strengthened my adaptability and confidence. Change is an opportunity for growth and to learn from new environments and people.

AI is one of the biggest change drivers in finance. Its automation of routine tasks and its provision of faster insights, analysis and risk management to enhance decision-making allows finance professionals to concentrate on higher-value work. AI will soon become as common in finance as email – an everyday resource that empowers professionals.

My biggest achievement has been building a fulfilling career while raising a family. Combining professional work with family life requires patience, resilience and adaptability. Success isn’t about choosing between the two – it’s about balancing personal and professional growth.

My favourite saying is: ‘Be nice to people, and if you don’t have something kind to say, stay quiet.’ Kindness and respect create a positive atmosphere that make workplaces and communities more collaborative and supportive.

Imagination is as essential to accountancy as it is to fashion design

If I had law-making powers, I would focus on eradicating organised crime, drug dealing and human trafficking. With fair justice systems and prevention initiatives, we can build safer, more stable communities.

If I weren’t a qualified accountant, I would have loved to become a fashion designer. I’ve always admired the creativity and the craftsmanship behind handmade clothing. It’s a career that would allow me to use my imagination and attention to detail, which also serve me well in finance. Both careers require precision and creativity, just expressed through different media.

In my own time, I love gardening and growing flowers. It is so rewarding to nurture something and see it bloom. I also enjoy camping and spending time outdoors, as it helps me to relax and recharge. Recently, I’ve developed a passion for dragon boating, a sport that combines teamwork, rhythm and endurance. Whether I’m on the water, in my garden or enjoying a campfire, it all helps me appreciate life’s simple fulfilling moments.
