Gaining my ACCA qualification was a big deal for me. I guess I’ve had several achievements in my life, but that really stands out. Like so many, I’d dreamed of passing those exams and earning those letters after my name since university. The journey was tough, and staying up until midnight waiting for that SMS telling me the result was nerve-wracking. But the rush when I finally got the news was unforgettable.
At school I really enjoyed science and developed an interest in becoming a pilot. However, life took a different path after I heard my dad speak highly of auditors and their crucial role in ensuring companies’ financial integrity. This led me to pursue accounting. Interestingly, things have come full circle for me and I’m now working in the airline industry, currently with United Airlines.
A culture that Prioritises work-life balance boosts my productivity and job satisfaction
I have stepped out of my comfort zone several times in my career and personal life. One major leap came when I was pursuing an MBA in finance through a weekend programme. To keep up with the workload meant sacrificing Friday nights out, a couple of weddings and many other social events for over two years, not to mention the significant fees involved. It was tough, but it paid off. I’m glad I pushed myself to take that step, as it was totally worth it.
My favourite quote comes from the Bible, found in the book of Philippians 4:13: ‘I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.’ This also relates to another of my favourite quotes, from the American author and spiritual leader, Marianne Williamson: ‘Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, but that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.’
What I love about my job is the autonomy I have, which is thanks to my superiors. They trust my capabilities and allow me to take charge and own my own work. The culture we have also prioritises work-life balance, which boosts my productivity and job satisfaction.
I firmly believe that AI is here to stay, and while some may think it poses a threat to finance professionals, I see it as a game-changer. I feel AI will make the work of the finance professional easier and streamline processes that will bring about greater efficiency and effectiveness.
There’s a fascinating intersection between law, accounting and finance
If I had law-making powers, I would make financial literacy a mandatory subject in schools across Ghana. This would empower young people with essential skills to manage their finances, so they can make more informed decisions and build a stable financial future.
If I weren’t a finance professional, I would likely have pursued law. I am passionate about legal matters and believe there’s a fascinating intersection between law, accounting and finance. One day I might even explore doing law alongside my finance work, as the combination could be good for my career.
When I am not at work, I like to spend time with family and friends. I also enjoy watching all sorts of movies – it’s a simple but important way to recharge.
