I moved from Nigeria to the UK 14 years ago. I knew I wanted a qualification that would give me opportunities and help me build credibility in a new environment, and I am pleased I made the decision early to go with ACCA. It helped me transition into the UK market and understand different frameworks and ways of working, and gave me access to opportunities that shaped my career. It also allowed me to meet people, learn from others and build relationships that have been valuable throughout my journey.
My career has never been a straight line. I started off in audit, which gave me a strong foundation. But after a few years, I found myself wanting to understand why businesses made the decisions they made. What drove performance? How did strategy translate into results? What was happening beyond the finance function? That curiosity shaped the career choices I made afterwards and helped me think beyond the traditional finance role.
Transformation is not just about systems; it is about understanding people
I took on roles in strategy and am now in transformation. I have worked on global programmes focused on streamlining processes and improving ways of working across different markets. Transformation is not just about systems and processes; it is about understanding people, building trust and helping teams move through change.
My current role is fast-paced. Being part of a private equity-owned organisation means things can change quickly; that can be challenging, but there is also a lot of opportunity. You are constantly thinking on your feet, asking whether there is a better way of doing things and how processes can be improved. I believe growth happens in those environments; they push you to learn, adapt and build resilience.
When I think about the moments I am most proud of, I think about people. Organisations succeed because of the strength of the people within them. We spend so much of our lives at work, so creating an environment where people feel supported is really important – and incredibly rewarding.
Mentorship has become such an important part of how I lead. When I started in my current role, I looked at where we were as a function and where we needed to be over the next five years. I took a team of management accountants on a journey of change, helping them become stronger business partners. We focused not only on technical skills, but also on the softer skills such as communication.
There are many different paths you can take, and it is important not to limit yourself too early
I wish I had had more mentors earlier in my career. I would have been more fearless and perhaps avoided some mistakes along the way. I highly recommend surrounding yourself with people who have travelled the path you want to take. Learn from them, ask questions and build those relationships early. I would also say be courageous. When opportunities come, take them. That is where you build skills, confidence and experience.
Finance is such a broad profession. There are many different paths you can take, and it is important not to limit yourself too early. Understand what is happening beyond your immediate role, keep learning and pay attention to how the profession and the wider business environment are changing.
Outside work, life slows down. I have a young family, and they bring balance and perspective. I am also an author of books and poems, and I enjoy cooking, gardening and spending time in nature. I am an early riser, so I value those quiet moments before the day begins. Walking, reflecting and having that time to myself helps me recharge.
