I work alongside engagement teams on complex accounting and auditing issues, providing them with technical guidance and assisting them in applying the standards consistently. We also deliver technical training to these teams, along with coaching around emerging topics.
One of the challenges within the role is the ability to stay relevant. With updates to the standards, along with the ever-changing environment, there are always new and emerging issues, which is also something that excites me, as no two days are the same.
Accounting is not merely about what happened. It drives business goals by providing the relevant insights to help management achieve their goals.
I’ve made a safe environment for team members to learn and grow
After having the opportunity to work in Big Four firms across Australia, Singapore and Malaysia, one of the professional challenges I’ve faced is probably the differences in culture. Along the journey, I’ve had the opportunity to polish my communication skills and develop an ability to understand and connect deeply with individuals from all over the world.
Something I’m most proud of is my ability to build strong engagement teams with low turnover. I’ve managed to bring teams together and made a safe environment for members to learn and grow. I’ve also coached and developed audit professionals across multiple levels, contributing to succession planning and strengthening the firm’s talent pipeline. Seeing my team members grow and succeed in their careers has been the one of my greatest achievements.
Having the ACCA qualification demonstrates commitment
ACCA feels like a global accountancy passport; it’s so well recognised. Having the ACCA qualification also indirectly demonstrates commitment, as it requires a sufficient amount of stamina and discipline for one to become qualified.
My ambition is to become a trusted adviser that audit teams turn to for their most complex technical challenges. I want to continue to provide them with quality and practical solutions that can be supported by sound professional judgments.
In my spare time, I don’t do anything too fancy. Like many, I enjoy spending time with my loved ones. I also enjoy a great meal and exploring cuisines from around the world.
If I weren’t an accountant, I’d probably still do something within the accountancy field, considering how broad it is. I still have passion for the profession, despite the number of years I’ve spent working within it.
