I started my career in audit, where I gained a strong understanding of financial reporting and business operations across different industries. I then moved into the corporate sector with IMARAT Group, where I progressed to assistant manager finance. Today, I am an auditor with the Federal Board of Revenue, working in Pakistan’s tax administration and compliance framework.
I have always been inspired by the idea that finance is much more than numbers. It is a tool that promotes transparency, accountability and informed decision-making. Becoming ACCA qualified strengthened my belief that accountants can play an important role in building stronger organisations and economies.
Every new challenge has taught me something valuable
Working across audit, the corporate sector and now the public sector has given me a unique perspective. In audit, I learned to develop my professional scepticism, attention to detail and commitment to quality. My corporate experience shifted my focus to strategic planning and operational efficiency, which became my priorities.
The public sector is a completely different dimension, with the objective of protecting public revenue, strengthening tax compliance and ensuring fairness. Every audit we do has a wider impact because it improves governance and public trust. The opportunity to serve the country was one of the main reasons I chose to move into the public sector.
I stepped out of my comfort zone when I left corporate finance. I had to quickly adapt to a completely different regulatory environment, where tax legislation, investigative procedures and forensic audit techniques are key. However, I believe that professional development comes from being willing to learn and taking on responsibilities that stretch your abilities.
This is my favourite saying: ‘Success is not about being better than others; it is about being better than the person you were yesterday.’ This resonates with me as I believe continuous improvement, consistency and integrity are the foundations of long-term success. Every new challenge has taught me something valuable and made me both a better professional and a person.
A transparent financial system benefits businesses, government and society alike
If I had law-making powers, I would promote transparency and accountability across the public and private sectors through greater digitalisation of financial reporting and tax compliance. A transparent financial system benefits businesses, government and society alike. Technology has the power to reduce fraud, improve efficiency and increase public confidence in institutions.
What I enjoy most about my job is the investigative nature of tax auditing. Every case is different, requiring analytical thinking, professional judgment and a thorough understanding of financial information. I particularly enjoy analysing records, identifying risk and ensuring that tax laws are applied fairly and consistently. Knowing that my work helps protect the national revenue gives me a strong sense of purpose.
My biggest achievement has been building a diverse career across audit, corporate finance and the public sector while continuing to grow professionally. Each new role has demanded new technical knowledge, different skills and the confidence to embrace change. I am proud of becoming a member of ACCA and successfully applying my expertise across these sectors.
If I wasn’t an accountant, I would probably have pursued a career in law. I have always been interested in analysing complex issues, interpreting legislation and solving problems – qualities I use in my current role.
Outside work, I like reading books, particularly about personal development, leadership and history. I also enjoy spending time with family and friends, exploring new cafés, travelling and staying healthy through regular exercise. These activities help me stay balanced, motivated and ready to embrace new challenges.
