My role at Companies House was newly created when I took it on, so I’ve been able to mould it into something exciting and challenging. I have responsibility for analysing accounts that are reported to us because they look suspicious, or because they don’t comply with Companies Act regulations. I also liaise with accountancy bodies and other government departments. As a member of the government’s Forensic Accounting Knowledge Network, I share best practice with colleagues across the country.

My day is very varied. There are usually meetings with colleagues to discuss key topics and findings, as well as my analytical work. I’m usually out of the office a couple of days a month meeting key business stakeholders.

I tell people my role is more fun than an accountant should be able to have. The variety is fantastic.

We deal with issues when someone makes a complaint, so at present we are reactive. But going forward, I’d like to develop more proactive processes, which is exciting as well as presenting challenges. I’ve already set up an email, accountsinvestigations@companieshouse.gov.uk, which allows accountants who spot anything suspicious to send information straight to me.

I tell people my role is more fun than an accountant should be able to have. The variety is fantastic. It’s certainly not what people envision when I tell them I’m an accountant – and  I like that.

I always tell people: ‘Don’t despise the small beginnings.’ I started out working in SMEs while studying. Post-qualification, I worked for a multinational company before moving to Companies House four years ago. The experience you gain from working in a variety of sectors and roles builds a really powerful portfolio of experience that I don’t think you get if you work in just one sector. By choosing ACCA, I gained a qualification where this could be achieved.

My biggest professional achievement to date is achieving FCCA status. I did the qualification through the mature student entry route after realising accountancy was the career for me. I had to take a year off from studying after falling on stairs and fracturing my spine, but that didn’t stop me from completing the qualification. I’m looking to build on this with an MSc in forensic accounting. Knowing that I’ve already gained a masters-level qualification gives me the confidence to do this.

I’m a keen gardener and recently invested in a greenhouse, so I’m looking forward to what I can grow this year. It’s very relaxing planning and tending a garden. I’m a Christian and attend a local church – this has given me the opportunity to go to the US a few times, where I’ve made great friends. I’m planning to travel there again this year. I’m lucky enough to live by the sea, so there are plenty of great walks on my doorstep.
