This is the 20th anniversary of my career journey, which started when I graduated with a degree in Finance and Accounting from the University of Tirana. I was inspired to become an accountant by my mother, who always showed me the good sides of the profession, especially the importance of always acting with integrity.

I saw KPMG Albania’s presentation at university and, after applying, I was offered a junior position. Following my training I chose to work in the tax department. I am very glad and proud to have spent my career at KPMG Albania.

Throughout my career – and particularly after becoming a manager – I have learned that to best serve the needs of the client you need to put yourself in their shoes, so you can discover the best outcomes and how to achieve them. Being a successful professional is not achieved simply by providing a solution, but by helping clients to grow and be successful.

As a partner you must learn how to identify the best in each individual

As an associate partner, there is no end to one’s professional development. There is still much to learn, and you must realise you cannot be an expert on everything. One of the qualities required of a partner is to be able to build and lead a strong team, with every member having their own skills and capabilities, and complementing each other. I think everyone has a strong point, but as a partner you must learn how to identify the best in each individual, rather than spending time on any negative aspects.

The main challenge businesses face in Albania is the way laws are interpreted and implemented. The country has gone through different systems with lots of changes in the legal system and legislation. Therefore, people tend to be flexible, adapt easily, and are capable of catching the ‘rhythm’ in the way developed countries’ economies are evolving.

If I had law-making powers, I would change the judiciary system rather than the laws. The laws may often be good, but there needs to be an improvement in the court system and how laws are interpreted.

What I enjoy most about my work is the dynamic business environment. I like getting to know people, while working across many diverse industries. Every day brings something different.

I consider creativity to be important in every part of life

My favourite quote is: ‘Success is not reaching first place but being able to stay there for as long as possible.’

I have never thought of working in any other profession except accountancy. However, being a medical doctor would have been interesting. Perhaps this thought has come from simply realising the importance of health and being more aware of it.

In terms of hobbies, I am currently into art and creative things such as drawing, painting, handcrafting and music, but I also love cooking. I consider creativity to be important in every part of life, especially when one has a professional career. Having hobbies and other interests is a way to boost the imagination, and improve the way we think and our logic, so we can learn how to continuously enjoy what we do in both life and career.
