Lang Trinh Mai Huong FCCA has been named the overall winner of ACCA’s Global Public Sector Advocacy Awards. Having also won the award for Vietnam, Huong was recognised for her longstanding commitment to furthering the cause of excellence in public sector finance and championing ACCA’s presence in Vietnam.

‘Huong has been a tireless advocate for ACCA, consistently championing our mission and values across Vietnam’s public sector,’ says Ren Varma, head of ACCA Mainland South-East Asia.

‘Promoting ACCA in Vietnam has been a professional mission and a personal passion’

Huong, deputy director general at the Department of International Cooperation at the State Audit Office of Vietnam (SAV), was Vietnam’s very first Vietnamese ACCA lecturer and also founded the country’s first training company dedicated to delivering ACCA qualifications. ‘I have taught and mentored almost a thousand ACCA students, many of whom are now qualified members,’ she says.

Since then, she has directed her considerable energy into embedding ACCA qualifications across Vietnam’s public sector, ensuring specialist subjects such as International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and sustainability have a presence in training programmes within public sector bodies, banks and universities.

Since joining SAV, first as deputy director general of the Audit Training Institute and later in the Department of International Cooperation, Huong has worked to strengthen relationships between ACCA and Vietnam’s institutions. As the contact person between ACCA and Vietnam’s universities and its government, many long-term, strategic partnerships between ACCA and key government agencies exist due to her efforts.

As a frequent speaker, Huong has represented Vietnam at the International Federation of Accountants – and the Vietnam Association of Certified Public Accountants – as well as at the ACCA International Assembly.

‘ACCA’s standing is growing strongly in Vietnam’, Huong says.

Promoting co-operation

Her objective has been to promote professionalism and embed high ethical and technical standards within public sector accounting, while encouraging dialogue and co-operation between ACCA, Vietnam’s government bodies, academia and employers.

‘Promoting ACCA in Vietnam has been both a professional mission and a personal passion,’ she says.

Become an advocate

Every day, ACCA members can act as advocates – for the accountancy profession in general and for ACCA-qualified accountants in particular.

Entering awards is just one advocacy route. Showing public support can take various forms, such as speaking at conferences or at school career fairs, forwarding information to colleagues or clients, and sharing a post on social media.
