ACCA has launched an ambitious initiative in Nigeria, with plans to replicate it in other countries in the continent.

The Africa Advocacy Programme (AAP) brings together prominent experts from a range of sectors and disciplines to influence strategic policy development in support of economic growth.

‘The aim is to develop a voice on critical economic and social issues’

Launched in Nigeria last month, the programme provides a platform where the knowledge and expertise of specialists from different fields can be brought together to develop a continent-wide conversation to help tackle endemic challenges.

The initiative sees ACCA, its members and the profession making a difference to the economies of African countries, placing accountants and the profession in collaboration with key sector players at the forefront.

Influence and shape policy

Jamil Ampomah, ACCA’s director for Africa, said: ‘The aim is to develop a voice on critical economic and social issues, with a view to influencing and shaping national policy decisions and actions for the good of the wider public.

‘The programme provides an opportunity for ACCA to contribute to policy debate and influence its design, implementation, monitoring and review.’

In Nigeria, the AAP will be led by ACCA Global Forum member Taiwo Oyedele FCCA, partner and Africa tax leader at PwC. Five sub-committees made up of influential individuals from each sector will function as thinktanks, focusing on:

  • corporate governance and sustainability
  • business and finance
  • education and technology
  • SMEs/SMPs
  • capacity development and talent

The Nigeria committee is made up of experienced professionals employed in African companies and foreign multinationals, change leaders, entrepreneurs and social entrepreneurs, all with a shared aim of contributing to the economic future of the country.

The initiative is due to be rolled out in Zambia and Ghana in the coming months.
