I grew up in Zimbabwe’s Masvingo province in the south-east of the country. My working life began back in 2015 with a training contract as an audit clerk with the accountancy firm Vali in the capital Harare. Two years later, keen to gain wider experience and exposure to the public sector, I joined the Office of the Auditor-General, where I gained my ACCA Qualification in 2018. After a couple of years I moved back into practice at Baker Tilly Central Africa in Harare. Currently, I am an audit senior for Amazon Associates in Lusaka, Zambia.
Audit allows me to know the real mission, values and operations of an entity, and to promote good governance
I am truly thankful for the support and career guidance I got from my brother, Magarika. He took me through the process of qualifying as an ACCA, and if it was not for him, I would not be where I am today.
The global recognition of ACCA has opened many doors for me, giving me the chance to acquire auditing experience across all sectors of the economy. To give something back, I have mentored several ACCA students in Zimbabwe, helping them to pass the qualification.
I moved from the Office of the Auditor-General into practice to deepen my audit experience in the business world. Public sector bodies generally provide a service, while private sector companies make a profit, so understanding where and how money is made and spent is very different.
In the public sector, an auditor reports on where resources could be used more efficiently in order to make better use of public money. In business, it is more about ensuring that records are correct and that there are clear ways of tracking profit, while maintaining full records.
Zimbabwe presents challenges for accountants. The informal sector makes up a high percentage of the economy, so many enterprises do not require auditing and financial services. This poses problems in acquiring broad experience as employment opportunities can become limited.
There is a lack of enforcement of the laws in Zimbabwe. If I could, I would give more power to law-enforcement agencies to bring the perpetrators of financial crime and corruption to book. There should be equality in the application of the law.
Zambia, on the other hand, can be regarded as a developing country. It offers business and learning opportunities across the economy, in agriculture, mining, manufacturing, retail, education and tourism.
I love auditing because it provides a broad perspective of an organisation. I get to know the real mission, values and operations of the entity, and have the opportunity to promote good governance and add value.
If I were not an auditor, I think I would have become a lawyer. In high school I was chosen to represent my class on in our history debate competition, and I also enjoyed arts subjects.
In my spare time I enjoy sport. I have joined a local football team here in Lusaka to stay in shape and meet new people. I am a Manchester City fan, and I also love travelling around the world.
